Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly gearing up for a summer transfer battle to sign West Ham United's dynamic attacker, Crysencio Summerville.

With West Ham facing relegation from the Premier League, the 24-year-old Dutch international is believed to be exploring his options. Sources suggest Summerville is too talented for the Championship and eager to compete at a higher level, making a move to a club like Tottenham an attractive prospect.

According to Dutch publication Voetbal International, Spurs made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Summerville in the January transfer window and are now preparing to reignite their interest. While West Ham would undoubtedly prefer to keep such a key player, financial pressures from relegation might force their hand, especially if a compelling offer comes their way.

Tottenham, meanwhile, is looking to bolster its attacking options. The club has reportedly struggled with creating chances from wide areas and needs more consistent goal-scoring threat from the flanks. Summerville, having already showcased his quality in the Premier League with Leeds United and West Ham, could be the ideal solution.

Despite a somewhat underwhelming season, Tottenham boasts a strong managerial team and a squad filled with top talent. Signing Summerville could be a pivotal step in their bid to bounce back strongly next season, potentially providing him with the platform to compete for silverware while enhancing Spurs' attacking prowess.

Liverpool is reportedly looking to offload midfielder Harvey Elliott permanently this summer, with Leeds United emerging as a potential suitor. The 23-year-old Englishman is not expected to join Aston Villa permanently after his loan spell, creating an opportunity for other clubs.

Sports Boom reports that Elliott, who has no clear future at Anfield, needs regular playing time at a new club. Liverpool is expected to demand a transfer fee in the region of €30-35 million for the playmaker. Leeds United, keen on strengthening their squad in the summer window, see Elliott as an excellent potential addition.

The versatile midfielder can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wings, offering significant creative and goal-scoring threat. The prospect of consistent Premier League action with Leeds could be crucial for Elliott's development and help him reach his full potential. His previous performances for Liverpool, which include 15 goals and 21 assists, highlight his talent.

While Leeds United appears to have the financial capacity to pursue the transfer, several other clubs are also keeping tabs on Elliott's situation. Ipswich Town, Sunderland, Coventry City, and RB Leipzig are reportedly monitoring his future. It remains to be seen where the talented midfielder will end up as he seeks regular game time.

With a berth in the last eight of the tournament on the line, Bayern Munich set the stage alight in a matter of minutes to leave their Brazilian opponents on the ropes. Although Flamengo responded admirably in dominant periods, Vincent Kompany's side sealed their fate with victory and now must prepare for a meeting with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain next.

The Bavarians claimed a fortuitous 6th-minute lead as a corner swung in by Joshua Kimmich was steered into his own net by Erick Pulgar. Three minutes later, Bayern doubled their advantage to 2-0. Upamecano's aggressive tackle on de Arrascaeta retrieved possession and Harry Kane thumped home from 20 metres with the aid of a slight deflection off Leo Ortiz.

Both Konrad Laimer and Leo Pereira tried their luck from range before Flamengo slashed the deficit shortly past the half-hour. The club from Rio de Janeiro played the ball wide to Alex Sandro whose central cross grazed off de Arrascaeta's studs and into the path of skipper to Gerson to drive a rocket past Manuel Neuer.

In truth, it was a highly entertaining game as both sides committed to the press and initiated counterattacks when possible. Bayern would restore their two-goal safety net approaching the interval - Flamengo could only clear their lines as far as Leon Goretzka who gave goalkeeper Rossi the eyes with a whipped effort into the opposing corner.

Flamengo made the dream start to the second-half when referee Michael Oliver spotted a handball by Michael Olise from a de Arrascaeta cross. Penalty expert Jorginho, formerly of Chelsea and Arsenal, sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way with his typically composed technique from the spot. Miami basked in the high-scoring spectacle.

Approaching the hour, Kompany introduced Leroy Sané and Alexandar Pavlovic who took over from Coman and Goretzka. The game became a bit fragmented with only one half-chance coming Bayern's way as Kane headed wide from an Olise set-piece. However, the Englishman was in an offside position and therefore would not have stood.

Nothing could stand in the way of the 31-year-old marksman who stretched Bayern's lead out to 4-2 in the 73rd-minute. Once again, Die Rekordmeister reaped the rewards from a commited press. Kimmich fed Kane who instinctively plunged the ball inside the right post with clinical precision before wheeling away in celebration.

Bayern could have added further gloss to the scoreboard late on with a couple of lightning quick forays upfield. The final ball seemed to lack consistency at times as Michael Olise spurned a fine chance. Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller made cameos off the bench as the German champions rubber-stamped their ticket to the last eight in convincing fashion.

Paris Saint-Germain steamrollered Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

Miami hoped the Argentine superstar's magic could help them produce an unlikely result against his former side, but the Major League Soccer side were dismantled in Atlanta by Luis Enrique's rampant European champions.

Ageing great Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba had done well to reach the last 16 but the gulf in quality between the teams was laid bare over the 90 minutes.

Joao Neves netted twice for PSG, who benefitted from a Tomas Aviles own goal, while Achraf Hakimi was also on target.

After Neves opened the scoring early on Miami resisted until PSG hit three goals in 10 minutes towards the end of the first half.

Messi was the main draw, as fans chanted his name and most of the 66,000 crowd were clad in Miami's hot pink interspersed with Argentina shirts.

PSG dominated from the start, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia floating into the box and teeing up Bradley Barcola, but Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari thwarted him with an outstretched leg.

However shortly afterwards over-run Miami right-back Marcelo Weigandt fouled Desire Doue and it led to PSG's opener.

Vitinha whipped a free-kick to the back post where Portuguese midfielder Neves ran in completely unmarked, stooping to nod past Ustari after six minutes.

PSG's Fabian Ruiz had a goal disallowed for offside before Miami defender Noah Allen limped off injured in a further blow for Javier Mascherano's side.

With the Ligue 1 champions pressing high and keeping possession Miami found it hard to get Messi involved.

The 38-year-old Argentine superstar played a superbly weighted pass down the right flank for Tadeo Allende but a rare Miami break came to nothing.

Messi's intermittent interventions were not enough to hold back the Parisian tide.

PSG doubled their lead in the 39th minute when veteran holding midfielder Busquets got his footwork wrong in front of his own box.

Spanish compatriot Ruiz rapidly relieved him of the ball and combined with Barcola to set up Neves to tap home his second.

PSG grabbed their third when Aviles deflected Doue's cross into his own net, and Hakimi netted the fourth before half-time to put PSG out of sight.

The Morocco international's first effort was deflected onto the crossbar but he stayed alert at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium to fire home the rebound.

Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi lost his cool with a swipe aimed at Vitinha as the Argentine raged against the midfielder, Miami's impotence and PSG's swagger.

- Determined Messi -

Messi produced a brilliant pass for Suarez early in the second half, chipping a ball over the PSG defence, but the Uruguayan could not finish to offer Miami a lifeline.

Despite the impossibility of a comeback -- there was to be no comeback like the one Luis Enrique's Barcelona managed in 2017 against PSG from four goals down in which Messi and Suarez scored -- the Argentine was determined to bow out with a bang.

Messi drew a first save from PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma after the hour mark with a low effort.

Luis Enrique sent on winger Ousmane Dembele for his first appearance at the tournament after a hamstring injury, but the Frenchman was rusty and imprecise.

When Suarez was fouled by Lucas Beraldo on the edge of the box Messi had the chance to repeat his free-kick winner against Porto in the group stage, but his effort hit the wall.

It was not to be for Messi or Miami, but their second-half performance was respectable and the defeat was by a lesser margin than the French side's 5-0 Champions League final thrashing of Inter Milan.

PSG will face Bayern Munich or Flamengo in the quarter-finals in Atlanta on Saturday.

Australia qualified for next year's World Cup in North America, while Oman denied Palestine from keeping alive their hopes of a first appearance at a global finals with a last-gasp draw in Jordan on Tuesday.

Tony Popovic's Socceroos, who went into the third round's final matchday heavy favourites to progress, defeated direct rivals Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah to seal the second automatic qualification spot in Group C.

Saudi Arabia must instead make do with a place in the fourth round, alongside Indonesia. Japan had already secured top place in the group.

Herve Renard's Saudi side went into the decider at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium knowing only win by a five-goal margin would be enough to usurp Australia in second.

The hosts were given the perfect start when Abdulrahman Al-Aboud opened the scoring 19 minutes in, however, the visitors pulled level just before half-time through Connor Metcalfe's left-footed strike.

Australia were soon ahead, when three minutes into the second half Mitch Duke met Martin Boyle's cross to head home from close range.

Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan then saved Salem Al-Dawsari's late penalty to earn Australia a memorable victory and secure the country's sixth successive appearance at a World Cup in style.

In Group B, Palestinian hearts were broken when they conceded a penalty deep into injury-time to draw 1-1 with Oman in Amman.

Palestine, playing their 'home' fixtures at a neutral venue, took the lead on 49 minutes at King Abdullah II Stadium when Oday Kharoub headed Adam Kaied's corner into the top corner.

Oman were reduced to 10 men in the 73rd minute after Harib Al-Saadi was showed a second yellow card.

Yet the visitors rallied to snatch a precious point in the 97th minute, Issam Al-Sabhi converting a spot-kick following Ahmad Taha's foul on Muhsen Al-Ghassani.

The result means Oman finish fourth in the group at Palestine's expense and therefore advance to the next phase of qualification.

The top two teams in each of the three groups go straight to the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, while those in third and fourth move on to the fourth round.

Taking place in October, and comprising two groups of three, there are two places at next summer's tournament up for grabs, with Oman, UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia also in the running.

- Kamada stars for Japan -

Earlier on Tuesday, Crystal Palace forward Daichi Kamada scored twice for Japan and Paris Saint Germain's Lee Kang-in netted for South Korea as the Asian giants rounded off successful World Cup qualifying campaigns in style.

Japan romped to a 6-0 thrashing of Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia in Osaka, while South Korea cruised to a 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul where fans were treated to a late appearance by their idol Son Heung-min.

FA Cup winner Kamada struck twice in the first half for Japan, with Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino and substitute Mao Hosoya also on target against Indonesia, who finished fourth in Group C.

Iran and Uzbekistan are already through to next year's finals from Group A, as are Jordan and South Korea from Group B, who both secured qualification last week with a game to spare.

Jeon Jin-woo and goals from European-based trio Lee Kang-in, Oh Hyeon-gyu of Belgium's Genk and Lee Jae-sung of Germany's Mainz sealed the win.

Tottenham's Son, who has been struggling with injury, came on as a 75th-minute substitute.

Iraq confirmed third place in the group with a 1-0 victory against Jordan in Amman, the hosts having already clinched a first appearance at the World Cup.

Belgium held off a battling Wales and Italy gave sacked coach Luciano Spalletti a winning send-off in World Cup qualifying on Monday.

Elsewhere Manchester City star Erling Haaland's goal lifted Norway past Estonia, Luka Modric was among the scorers in Croatia's 5-1 rout of the Czech Republic, and the Faroes Islands left it late to down Gibraltar 2-1.

Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Cambiaso scored in each half as Italy beat Moldova 2-0 to inject a smidgeon of pride back in the Azzurri camp after last week's 3-0 thrashing by Norway which cost Spalletti his job.

The Italians trail Norway by nine points in European qualifying group I by nine points and are at risk of missing out on a third straight World Cup.

Even though they have played two games less their ticket to the United States, Canada and Mexico next year is far from certain.

Only top spot in each group guarantees automatic qualification with Italy's best hopes appearing to rest on finishing second and reaching the play-offs.

"When you're the national team coach you have no excuses, it's you who selects the squad," said Spalletti to public broadcaster Rai.

"It's the coach who has to make the difference and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that."

Over in Brussels Belgium raced to a three-goal lead over Wales courtesy of Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku inside half an hour.

Wales, though, rallied through a Harry Wilson penalty, Sorba Thomas and Brennan Johnson to stun the side ranked eighth in the world.

But De Bruyne rode to his nation's rescue, as he has so often in a stellar career, by steering in Tielemans' perfect cross in the 88th minute.

It left Wales sitting second in Group J, one point behind North Macedonia, 1-0 winners over Kazakhstan, and three in front of Belgium, who have two games in hand.

This was Wales manager Craig Bellamy's first defeat in his first 10 matches in charge.

Wales captain Ben Davies told the BBC: "Getting back as close as we did is probably why it's as painful as it is.

"We knew we could do a lot better. You could see in the second half, we managed to nick a goal before half-time and it gave us something to hang on to and we pushed them close.

"We have plenty more games we just have to focus on ourselves and hopefully results go our way."

On Tuesday the Netherlands host Malta in Groningen hoping to make it two wins from two and close the gap on Poland, who have a stiff test in Finland, in Group G.

Stuttgart (Germany) (AFP) – Spain starlets Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams dazzled as La Roja beat France 5-4 in a thriller in Stuttgart on Thursday, to set up a Nations League final with Portugal.

Yamal bagged a brace while Williams scored and provided an assist as the two wingers cut France's makeshift defence to ribbons.

Mikel Merino and Pedri were also on the scoresheet for the Euro 2024 champions.

Kylian Mbappe netted a second-half penalty, but Spain were 5-1 up and cruising, before Les Bleus suddenly woke up as their opponents took their foot off the pedal.

France's three late goals -- a Rayan Cherki screamer, a Spain own goal and a stoppage time strike from Randal Kolo Muani -- were not enough.

Yamal, still just 17, said Spain "deserved to win."

"It was a great game -- at the end it was a little too close, but we played very well," he added.

Spain held on to book an all-Iberian Nations League final against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on Sunday in Munich, while France will face hosts Germany in Stuttgart for the bronze medal, earlier in the day.

A smiling goalscorer Merino told DAZN: "It was a crazy game. Not the best game for the coaches -- nobody wants to concede so many goals -- but an amazing game for the fans.

"We're going to remember this one for a long time."

Returning to Germany where they won the European Championship in dominant fashion a year ago, Spain seem an even more complete team, despite their late fadeout.

France coach Didier Deschamps said "it's a mixed bag."

"Not everything can be thrown in the rubbish bin... but I'm not leaving with a smile," he added.

France dangerous, Spain efficient

France were more dangerous in the opening stages, with Deschamps electing to channel his attack through Ousmane Dembele rather than Mbappe.

Dembele, fresh from Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League triumph, created an early chance for Mbappe, but the Real Madrid superstar wasted it, electing to pass rather than shoot when one-on-one with the 'keeper.

Minutes later, Spain escaped again as Theo Hernandez's long-range effort shaved the top of the crossbar.

Spain made France pay soon after, when Williams and Oyarzabal, La Roja's two goalscorers in the Euro 2024 final, linked up with 22 minutes played.

After a tear down the right, Yamal threaded it to Oyarzabal, who held off three defenders with his back to goal before finding Williams, who rifled his shot into the top of the net.

Spain grabbed full hold of the match just three minutes later when Oyarzabal dinked the French defence, allowing Merino to collect and hammer past an off-balance Maignan.

France had the better chances later in the half, with Dembele finding space in the box three times only to blast straight at a grateful Unai Simon.

Just before half-time, the narrowest of offsides robbed Spain of what would have been an incredible third.

In a clearly rehearsed free-kick play, Yamal found Martin Zubimendi behind the lines, who cut it back for Huijsen.

The second-half played out line the first, with France missing two big chances before Spain again scored a quick-fire double.

With 54 minutes played, Yamal won and converted a penalty, taking the ball from Williams before calmly slotting home.

France were reeling but Spain's starlets had no sympathy, Williams setting up Pedri for a fourth just one minute later.

Mbappe won and converted a penalty with 59 minutes played but Yamal stepped up again to snuff out French hopes of an unlikely comeback, scoring Spain's fifth with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Spain made four changes a their thoughts turned to Sunday, allowing France to score two late consolation goals.

Substitute Cherki scored a long-range effort on debut and then France forced Spain into conceding an own goal through Daniel Vivian.

Kolo Muani's header came in the fourth minute of stoppage time to cut the deficit to one, but France had left their comeback too late, as Spain held on.

Manchester City were held to a shock goalless draw by Premier League basement club Southampton on Saturday, denting their chances of a top-five finish as Brentford and Brighton kept up their push for European qualification.

Pep Guardiola's men were expected to waltz to three points on England's south coast and pull level with second-placed Arsenal on 67 points.

But although they dominated possession, they could not break the deadlock, despite the return to action of top-scorer Erling Haaland, who had been out since late March.

The away side dominated possession at St Mary's Stadium and had 26 shots but managed just five on target during a frustrating afternoon.

"(Southampton were) playing to defend and defend and defend and waste time," Guardiola told the BBC. "We take that point still, it's in our hands.

"Didn't expect them to defend so deep. Defensive we were so good but unfortunately we missed the last actions."

There was an explosion of joy among the home fans at the final whistle even though Southampton's relegation fate was sealed long ago.

The point for managerless Saints takes them to 12 for the season, meaning they have avoided the tag of being the joint-worst team in Premier League history.

They are now one point clear of Derby's tally of 11 in the 2007/08 campaign.

"We're under no illusions that it's not a great points tally," said Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. "The fans are happy in the sun smiling.

"Everyone knows it's been a difficult season for us. That one was for the fans and also the lads who have given everything. A lot of Mondays coming in after heavy defeats. Today is a relief."

Despite the draw, third-placed City remain well-placed to finish in the top five, which would secure qualification for the Champions League next season.

With two games to play they are four points clear of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest, though their rivals all have a game in hand.

City's title defence came off the rails in November and December during a season that Guardiola has admitted has been the toughest of his 16-year managerial career.

- Brentford winning run -

Brentford beat already relegated Ipswich 1-0 for their fourth straight win, climbing to eighth in the table, which may be enough for European football next season.

Kevin Schade headed home from Bryan Mbeumo's corner in the 18th minute for his 11th Premier League goal of the season.

"Europe is possible, we are focused," said Germany international Schade. "The team is like family and we want to win the next two games."

Brighton, also chasing European football, beat Wolves 2-0 at Molineux and are behind Brentford only on goal difference.

Danny Welbeck scored a first-half penalty and Brajan Gruda added a second in the 85th minute to secure the three points.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said he was "not thinking about Europe", instead focusing on the next game.

Everton went into their match on a poor run of form following a sharp uptick when David Moyes returned to manage the club but they long ago reached safety in the top flight.

Raul Jimenez put mid-table Fulham ahead at Craven Cottage but Vitalii Mykolenko levelled on the stroke of half-time.

Two second-half goals in three minutes from Michael Keane and Beto made it 3-1.

Seventh-placed Aston Villa travel to Bournemouth in the Saturday evening kick-off, still dreaming of securing a Champions League spot for next season.

Fourth-placed Newcastle host Chelsea, a place below them, on Sunday, with Forest in action against relegated Leicester.

Champions Liverpool play Arsenal, who are not yet certain of finishing in the top five despite being the closest challengers to Arne Slot's men this season.

Real Madrid defender Antonio Ruediger "has to change and he knows it himself" Germany sporting director Rudi Voeller said on Monday, following the player's behaviour in the Copa del Rey final.

Germany centre-back Ruediger was substituted in extra-time of Sunday's 3-2 Clasico loss to Barcelona before being sent off for throwing an object at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.

The 32-year-old had to be held back from confronting the official by fellow Madrid players and staff as he was shown a red card, with team-mates Lucas Vazquez and Jude Bellingham also dismissed at the end of the game.

"Toni is an exceptional footballer and a very emotional guy, a fighter on the pitch. He has to stay that way," Voeller told German news agency SID, a subsidiary of AFP.

"But in this case, he and some of his team-mates, let themselves be influenced too much by the extremely tense atmosphere around the club," he added.

Before the final, Bengoetxea and VAR referee Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes complained about attacks from Madrid's club television channel on officials this season.

"This can't happen. Especially not as a player for the German national team. He has to change that and he knows it himself, as his public reaction shows," former Germany coach Voeller said.

On Sunday, Ruediger apologised for his actions.

"There's definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I'm very sorry for that," Ruediger said on social media.

"After 111 minutes I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake. Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night," he added.

Voeller said the German international contacted him and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann on Sunday.

"We discussed the situation for a long time," said Voeller.

He said an exchange also took place internally within the German Football Association (DFB).

"Toni is an excellent player, but as a national team player, he must also show class in his behaviour," Voeller said.

"He rightly demands respect for himself. This respect he must also show to others without exception," the ex-Germany striker added.

- 'Suspend him' -

Other former Germany internationals rushed to voice outrage or support.

Ex-Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus, who holds the national team appearance record, demanded action.

"He lost his mind," Matthaeus told German broadcaster Sky. "He was out of control. I expect a XXL suspension."

Matthaeus pointed out Ruediger was already under scrutiny after receiving a one-match ban from European governing body UEFA for a throat-slitting gesture after netting a penalty in a shootout win over Atletico Madrid in a Champions League victory in March.

Ruediger faces a suspension of between four and 12 matches under Spanish Football Association rules, but SID said he is not expected to be sanctioned by the DFB.

Dieter Hamman, a midfielder who played 59 times for Germany also called for the DFB to act.

"I think the DFB should suspend him. I wouldn't consider him for the Nations League finals, so I would suspend him for two matches," Hamann told German channel Sport 1.

Former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann disagreed.

"He became such a great player because of who he is. And if we try to take that away from him now, he might not be able to reach his full potential. I'm not sure we can afford to do without him," said Lehmann said on Welt TV.

Germany host the final four of the Nations League, and will play a semi-final against Portugal on June 4 in Munich and a final or third-place play-off four days later.

Mariona Caldentey scored a superb goal as Arsenal stunned Lyon in the second leg of their Women's Champions League semi-final on Sunday, a 4-1 win in France taking the English club through to next month's final against Barcelona 5-3 on aggregate.

Arsenal needed to overturn a 2-1 deficit following the first leg of the last-four clash against the record eight-time Champions League winners, and they levelled the tie on aggregate via goalkeeper Christiane Endler's early own goal.

Spain star Caldentey then made it 2-0 for Arsenal on the day to put them ahead overall in first-half stoppage time, and the visitors ran away with the tie after the break.

Alessia Russo scored just 27 seconds after the restart and Caitlin Foord pounced on a calamitous defensive slip to get Arsenal's fourth goal.

Melchie Dumornay, who scored Lyon's winner in the first leg last week, pulled one back but it was too little too late for them as Arsenal held out to take the tie.

"I think we showed it before in this season and I think this was the biggest challenge so far coming back from a 2-1 loss at the Emirates against this top team with so much quality," Arsenal coach Renee Slegers told broadcaster DAZN.

Arsenal, who are second in the English Women's Super League behind Chelsea, will now face Barcelona in the final in Lisbon on May 24.

The Catalans qualified earlier on Sunday with a 4-1 win away to Chelsea, sealing an 8-2 aggregate triumph.

Barcelona will be the overwhelming favourites as they head into the final looking to win the trophy for the third year running and fourth time overall.

"I look forward to it. Barcelona is a fantastic football team and we respect them and we really look forward to the challenge," said Slegers.

- First final in 18 years -

Arsenal won the competition in 2007 when it was still known as the UEFA Women's Cup, and they are now through to their first final since then.

It is a remarkable achievement against a side that had won every game in the competition this season coming into the second leg, and who were aiming for their eighth final appearance in the last 10 years.

Lyon held the advantage coming into the return in front of their own fans at the Groupama Stadium, which was nevertheless far from full for the occasion.

They also had captain Wendie Renard back after injury and starting in central defence as the French international made her 500th appearance for the club.

However, Lyon never really recovered from a dreadful start as they fell behind inside five minutes in bizarre circumstances.

Damaris Egurrola tried to head away an Arsenal corner under pressure inside her own six-yard box, but only succeeded in playing the ball off goalkeeper Endler and in to put the visitors in front on the day.

Caldentey then got the crucial second right at the end of the opening half, the former Barcelona player collecting a Russo lay-off and firing high into the net from the edge of the area.

That meant Arsenal now held the lead in the tie, and they went further ahead right from the kick-off in the second half as England international Russo found herself through on goal and fired in.

There was then no way back for Lyon when Arsenal got their fourth on 63 minutes, as Vanessa Gilles slipped when controlling a short pass out by Endler, allowing Australian star Foord to advance and beat the goalkeeper.

Dumornay reduced the deficit inside the final 10 minutes but Lyon needed two more goals to level the tie again and Arsenal held on.

VITORIA-GASTEIZ, Spain, April 13 (Reuters) - Defending champions Real Madrid secured a nervy 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Deportivo Alaves in LaLiga on Sunday after a reckless foul by Kylian Mbappe had them reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

Eduardo Camavinga gave Real the lead in the 34th minute, scoring from outside the box with a brilliant curled shot, after an earlier goal by Raul Asencio was ruled out following a VAR check.

Mbappe's violent tackle on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco left Real a man down before halftime. The player count, however, was level in the second half after Vinicius Jr was subjected to a similar foul by Manu Sanchez, who also was sent off.

Second-placed Real have 66 points from 31 games and are four points behind leaders Barcelona, who edged Leganes 1-0 on Saturday.

Real, who on Tuesday were handed a shock 3-0 loss at Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, have struggled in all competitions this month as they still try to cut the gap to Barca.

They were without suspended manager Carlo Ancelotti after the Italian saw his fifth yellow card in the loss to Valencia last weekend. He watched from the stands as Real were managed by his son and assistant coach Davide Ancelotti.

TWO REDS

With Spain's national team coach Luis de la Fuente present, defender Asencio thought he put Real in front after 19 minutes, nodding home from a corner.

His goal was chalked off after a VAR review showed that Asencio supported himself on an Alaves defender when scoring, while Antonio Ruediger knocked down goalkeeper Jesus Owono seconds prior in the same play.

Camavinga gave Real the lead 15 minutes later, scoring inside the left post after a smart one-two with Federico Valverde.

It was the midfielder's first league goal since March 2022.
But things got tricky for the visitors in the 38th minute when Mbappe was shown a straight red for taking down Blanco as the referee overturned his initial decision of booking him with a yellow after consulting with VAR.

Alaves managed to swing possession in their favour after the restart, and forward Carlos Martin put Thibaut Courtois to work with his low strike from outside the area during a threatening spell by the hosts.

It was, however, 10 versus 10 after Alaves defender Sanchez also saw red for fouling Vinicius, and Owono denied Jude Bellingham late on from close range.

LIVERPOOL, England, April 13 (Reuters) - Liverpool resumed their march to a second Premier League title on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United as Mohamed Salah broke the record for most goal involvements in a season and Virgil van Dijk scored a late winner.

After West Ham had scored an equaliser in the 86th minute, skipper Van Dijk grabbed the winner with a header three minutes later in front of the Kop to put Liverpool two wins away from the title.

The result gave Liverpool a 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal with six games left, while West Ham are 17th with 35 points, 14 points from the relegation zone.

Prior to kickoff, a minute's silence was held at Anfield to honour the 97 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. But the fans were in full voice soon after, chanting Salah's name to celebrate his two-year contract extension.

Van Dijk's contract expires at the end of the season but the Dutchman hinted he could stay, with a development expected next week.

"The main focus was to get three points and get a little closer to all of our dreams. Everyone knows how much I love this club, let's see what next week will look like," he said.

"I can say I'm very proud today to captain my 100th game for Liverpool. It was an emotional day with the Hillsborough anniversary."

Following a bright start for the home side, Salah duly delivered the cross for the first goal - a sublime pass with the outside of his boot that curled past the last defender and gave Luis Diaz a simple tap-in at the edge of the six-yard box.

PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD

The opener gave Salah the record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season - 45 consisting of 27 goals and 18 assists.

West Ham came close to an equaliser when Mohammed Kudus found Alisson off his line and attempted a lob but the Brazilian keeper scrambled backward and tipped the shot onto the crossbar to give Liverpool a reprieve.

Alexis Mac Allister nearly doubled their lead from a free kick two minutes after the restart but saw Alphonse Areola get a hand to it as the ball rattled the crossbar.

Liverpool also had a penalty shout when a cross into the box hit James Ward-Prowse's hand but it was not given. At the other end, Alisson rushed off his line to deny Jarrod Bowen who was played through on goal by Lucas Paqueta.

As West Ham grew into the game, the Anfield crowd became restless while Salah also looked visibly disappointed when he was taken off as his mini goal drought extended to five games in all competitions.

A minute later, Liverpool gifted West Ham the equaliser when a breakdown in communication saw Andy Robertson score an own goal when he tried to deal with Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross.

Robertson was livid with Van Dijk for not dealing with the cross as he screamed in frustration, but the captain made amends at the other end when he restored their lead three minutes later.
As Mac Allister floated the ball in from a corner kick, Van Dijk's towering header beat the keeper to spark wild celebrations at Anfield.

"I heard Robertson shout, but these things unfortunately happen," Van Dijk said. "There was time to make it right and luckily we did."

Mohamed Salah is "closing in" on a new Liverpool deal, it has been claimed. The Reds' top scorer is out of contract at the end of the season, but appears to be closer than ever to an extension.

Salah is one of three big-name Liverpool stars with deals expiring in the summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold appears destined for Real Madrid, while captain Virgil van Dijk is yet to agree fresh terms,

According to The Times, significant progress has been made on the Salah front. Liverpool have already reached an apparent breakthrough in negotiations with Van Dijk, and could be set for a double boost.

There is said to be a "growing expectation" on Merseyside that the Reds' top earner will renew, and Liverpool shared a photo of Salah in training - along with a crown emoji - not long after reports of an extension broke. The former Roma star has been a Liverpool player since 2017, and could eventually bring up a decade with the club if he agrees to an extended stay.

Salah has led the way in attack this season as Liverpool close in on their first Premier League title since 2020. He tops the Premier League scoring charts and also has more assists than any other player in the competition.

After Liverpool's weekend defeat at Fulham, Van Dijk offered some encouragement on the subject of his own potential extension. "There is progress, yeah. I don’t know, we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see," the centre-back said.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them at Fulham. But want I them to be there against West Ham on Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

The Fulham reverse left Salah without an open-play goal for the club since he netted in a win at Manchester City in February, though he converted two penalties against Southampton during that period. Speaking after Sunday's game, manager Arne Slot backed his leading man to rediscover that scoring touch.

“Maybe Mo should take it as a compliment because his numbers weren't normal when he was scoring," Slot said. "The good thing about Mo is that he knows what kind of player he is. Mo will show up again, I don't worry about that.

Newcastle ended their 56-year trophy drought in stunning style as Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a 2-1 win against Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday.

Eddie Howe's side made history at Wembley with a superb display that left the runaway Premier League leaders shell-shocked.

Burn put Newcastle ahead late in the first half and Isak's 27th goal in all competitions doubled their lead after the interval.

Federico Chiesa got one back in the closing seconds, but Newcastle held on for their first major silverware since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

That success in the predecessor to the Europa League is a relic of a bygone era, but this long-awaited triumph will be forever etched in the memories of the Newcastle fans who turned one half of Wembley into a roiling sea of black and white with their ecstatic celebrations.

It was also Newcastle's first major domestic prize dating back 70 years to the 1955 FA Cup.

Since the Magpies lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, 30 different English teams had won silverware, while Liverpool had clinched 38 major trophies in that time.

But after losing the 2023 League Cup final against Manchester United, Howe's team returned to Wembley and set the record straight at last.

"We were well aware of the history and we wanted to do the club proud. We wanted to score, we wanted to perform and we wanted to win," Howe said.

"We are breaking new ground. I thought we were magnificent today."

Newcastle had endured five relegations to the second tier since their last trophy, with club legends like Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne and Malcolm MacDonald failing to win silverware in their time on Tyneside.

Aside from a brief period when Kevin Keegan's self-styled "entertainers" challenged for the title in the 1990s, Newcastle have endured decades of underachievement and self-inflicted wounds that rendered them a laughing stock for long periods.

All that changed in 2021 when a Saudi-backed consortium completed a takeover from unpopular owner Mike Ashley and quickly hired Howe as their manager.

Thanks to Howe's astute leadership and the Saudi financial backing, Newcastle have been transformed from relegation candidates to silverware winners.

The defeat was another painful blow for Liverpool just days after their Champions League last 16 exit on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain.

But despite failing to win their first trophy under boss Arne Slot, Liverpool still sit 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League, within touching distance of a record-equalling 20th English title.

"It's a very disappointing result. The game went the way Newcastle wanted it. They deserved to win. We were out-played in their style. They won more aerial duels than us," Slot said.

- History for Newcastle -

Liverpool are 23 points ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle in the league and hadn't lost to them for 17 games dating back to 2015.

But Howe's men were in no mood to be cowed by past failures

Newcastle fans unveiled a banner before kick-off urging their team to "write your name in the history books".

They rose to the challenge in spectacular fashion, snapping into tackles and counter-attacking with purpose, while Liverpool were sluggish and sloppy in possession.

Newcastle's desire and drive was clear to see when Joelinton tracked back from midfield to stop Jarell Quansah in his tracks and celebrated with a fist-pumping roar.

Despite nearly being caught out by Burn's aerial prowess earlier in the game, Liverpool failed to heed the warning as the towering centre-back put Newcastle ahead in the 45th minute.

Bizarrely left unmarked, with only the diminutive Alex Mac Allister anywhere near him, Burn was allowed to rise unchallenged to meet Kieran Tripper's corner as he thumped a powerful header into far corner from 12 yards.

Burn's goal -- Newcastle's first in a cup final since 1976 -- capped an incredible week for the journeyman centre-back, who received his first England call-up on Friday.

With Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah completely anonymous, the lethargic Reds had no answer as Isak put Newcastle into dreamland after 52 minutes.

Newcastle dominated in the air again as Jacob Murphy met Tino Livramento's cross with a header that found Isak, who drilled a superb first-time finish past Caoimhin Kelleher from 10 yards.

Chiesa's stoppage-time strike set up an anxious finale, but good things comes to those who wait.

And all across Wembley, Newcastle players and fans celebrated with abandon as a party over half a century in the making got into full swing.

Manchester City failed to ease fears of missing out on next season's Champions League after twice blowing the lead to draw 2-2 against Brighton, while third-placed Nottingham Forest thrashed Ipswich 4-2 on Saturday.

Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush put City in front, but high-flying Brighton extended their unbeaten run to seven games thanks to Pervis Estupinan's free-kick and an Abdukodir Khusanov own goal.

City boss Pep Guardiola said on Friday that just qualifying for the Champions League would be a "big success" after a difficult season for a side used to lifting the league title.

The English champions' early exit from Europe's top competition to Real Madrid had at least ensured a full week's preparation for Guardiola's men to bounce back from last weekend's dismal 1-0 defeat at Forest.

Marmoush was restored to the starting line-up and proved to be City's brightest spark going forward.

The Egyptian won the penalty from which Haaland opened the scoring with his 29th goal of the season.

City's lead lasted only 10 minutes as Estupinan curled a free-kick in off the post past the leaden-footed Stefan Ortega in the City goal.

Marmoush blasted City back in front from long range before half-time.

Brighton, though, took just three minutes into the second half to level again when Jack Hinshelwood's shot was turned into his own net by Khusanov.

Nico Gonzalez hit the post as City pushed in vain for a winner.

A top-five Premier League finish will almost certainly secure a Champions League place this season thanks to English clubs' strong performances in European competition.

A point leaves City still in fifth, just one point ahead of Brighton in seventh.

"I'm always confident, in that I am a master. I do have moments when I can doubt but I find the right way, the positiveness in everything," said Guardiola.

"I know it will be difficult for many reasons but we have nine games, nine finals."

- Forest hit four -

Forest's charge towards Europe's top club competition for the first time since 1980 continued with a dominant display at Portman Road.

The visitors struck three times in six first-half minutes to close to within one point of second-placed Arsenal and move six clear of City.

Nikola Milenkovic controlled a loose ball inside the area and blasted in on off the underside of the bar to open the floodgates.

Anthony Elanga then drilled in his first goal since Boxing Day at the end of a blistering Forest counter-attack.

Two minutes later Elanga took advantage of dreadful Ipswich defending to sprint clear and slot in his second of the afternoon.

"There is a good spell in the first half that really changed the game for six minutes," said Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who is not getting carried away dreaming of Champions League football.

"We have to focus on ourselves. Work as much as we can because there is a lot of football to be played yet."

Jens Cajuste and George Hirst scored late consolation goals for Kieran McKenna's men either side of Jota Silva's fourth for Forest.

Ipswich's uphill task to beat the drop suffered another blow as Wolves pulled nine points clear of the bottom three with a 2-1 victory at Southampton thanks to a double from Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Paul Onuachu pulled a goal back but Southampton remain on course to post the worst ever points tally in Premier League history.

Bournemouth's bid to qualify for Europe for the first time is fading after a 2-1 home defeat to Brentford.

Goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard earned the Bees victory after Vitaly Janelt's own goal had opened the scoring for Bournemouth.

Everton extended their unbeaten league run to nine games thanks to Jake O'Brien's 90th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as Luis Diaz ended his goal drought to spark a tense 2-1 win against struggling Wolves on Sunday.

Arne Slot's side got back on track after an unexpectedly poor week thanks to Diaz's first goal in 2025 and yet another Mohamed Salah strike.

Diaz opened the scoring early in the first half at Anfield as the Colombian forward finally scored for the 13th time this term after 10 games without a goal.

While Diaz has struggled to find the net, Salah is in red-hot form and his penalty before the interval took the Egypt star to 28 goals in all competitions this season.

Matheus Cunha netted in the second half for fourth-bottom Wolves, but although Liverpool looked tired in a disjointed, nervous, climax, they held on for a valuable victory.

Liverpool had gone two games without a win: an embarrassing FA Cup fourth round loss at second tier Plymouth last weekend and the stormy 2-2 draw at Everton on Wednesday.

Arsenal's 2-0 win at Leicester on Saturday had applied a little more pressure on Liverpool.

The Reds responded to Arsenal's challenge as they moved a step closer to a record-equalling 20th English title.

Liverpool, who last won the Premier League in 2020, will be within touching distance of the crown if they take maximum points from trips to Aston Villa and Manchester City before hosting Newcastle over the course of the next 10 days.

Liverpool boss Slot was in the dug-out despite being charged with abusive behaviour after angrily approaching referee Michael Oliver on the pitch following the Merseyside derby.

Slot was furious that James Tarkowski's stoppage-time equaliser was not disallowed because of a possible push by Toffees striker Beto on Reds defender Ibrahima Konate.

Slot had urged Liverpool to use their "anger" from the painful end to the Everton game as fuel to get back on track against Wolves.

They didn't have to wait long to light the fuse as Diaz bagged his first league goal at Anfield since September.

- Liverpool dig deep -

In the 15th minute, Diaz picked out Salah and his return pass took a wicked deflection off Toti Gomes.

Diaz stumbled forward to chest the ball past Wolves keeper Jose Sa as it barely trickled over the line.

It was hardly a work of art but Diaz wasn't complaining about the scruffy nature of the strike.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai nearly netted with a more eye-catching effort, striding forward with purpose before drilling a low shot just wide.

The Reds were rampant and Sa repelled Jota's drive at the near post after Robertson's cross caused panic in the Wolves defence.

Wolves couldn't stem the tide as Liverpool went further ahead in the 37th minute.

Wolves claimed Emmanuel Agbadou was pushed by Diaz before he raced into the area and was tripped by Sa.

But VAR ignored their protests and Salah flicked the penalty down the middle with a flamboyant flourish.

Salah has seven goals in his last six games, underlining his immense value to Liverpool as his contract winds towards its conclusion at the end of the season.

Wolves debutant Marshall Munetsi wasted a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit early in the second half.

Munetsi was sent clean through by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, but Alisson Becker raced off his line to make a fine save.

Jota appeared to have won a penalty when Agbadou's challenge sent him sprawling, but VAR overturned the decision as replays showed he had dived.

Liverpool had lost their momentum and Cunha took advantage, evading Ryan Gravenberch and curling a superb finish into the far corner in the 67th minute.

That set up a fraught finale for Liverpool, who had to dig deep to secure a fourth win in their last five league games.

Athletic Bilbao missed out on the chance to close the gap on the top two in La Liga as they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Espanyol on Sunday in a match that was temporarily stopped because of racist chanting.

In the 16th minute, referee Cuadra Fernandez was forced to activate the anti-racism protocol for insults to Bilbao forward Maroan Sannadi and reported by his teammate Inaki Williams.

The match was interrupted for three minutes and a message was communicated over the public address system for fans to stop shouting expletives. The referee warned that the next time the match would be stopped.

"This type of thing shouldn't happen. This is not the first time this has happened here. The referee acted very well. We must punish the culprits," said Williams.

When the game restarted, Roberto Fernandez put Espanyol ahead in the 62nd minute but Oihan Sancet, who scored a hat-trick in the win over Girona last weekend, levelled 15 minutes later.

It was hardly a satisfying result for either side.

On Saturday, Bilbao saw leaders Real Madrid and second-placed Atletico Madrid both held to draws.

Their own draw means they remain fourth, three points behind Barcelona, who host Rayo Vallecano on Monday and six behind Real.

Espanyol will rue the two dropped points but still climb out of the relegation zone. They are now 15th on 24 points, just one ahead of 18th-placed Valencia, the first team in the relegation places.

Liverpool overturned a first leg deficit to reach the League Cup final with a 4-0 win over Tottenham on Thursday, ramping up the pressure on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk were on target for the Reds, who will face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 for the first silverware of the English season.

Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot.

They enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League and visit Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA cup fourth round on Sunday.

"To reach a final should always be special," said Slot. "It was a very good performance from our side."

Spurs' trophy drought on the other hand goes on. Tottenham last lifted silverware in 2008 and Postecoglou now has one less opportunity to fulfil his promise of winning a trophy in his second season.

There is speculation the Australian could be shown the door if another goes awry away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup at the weekend with Spurs languishing 14th in the Premier League.

"We have given up a good opportunity tonight and we cannot shy away from that," said Postecoglou. "They were by far better team. They were too good for us."

Despite having more glamorous titles to win, Slot showed his desire to make the League Cup his first trophy as Liverpool boss by naming his strongest available team bar the usual rotation in goal for cup competitions as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker.

New signing Kevin Danso was forced straight in to Tottenham's injury-ravaged defence, while Mathys Tel also made an early debut off the bench after Richarlison hobbled off injured.

Liverpool had scored four in each of the previous two meetings between the sides at Anfield and repeated that feat to make light of their 1-0 first leg defeat in north London last month.

- Liverpool onslaught -

The home side had taken the first quarter to find their stride but the pressure built after Szoboszlai ran offside before sweeping home Salah's pass.

From the Egyptian's next delivery into the box, Spurs did not escape as Gakpo drilled in first time to move clear as the top scorer in this season's competition with five goals.

Antonin Kinsky kept Salah waiting for his goal with a fine save moments later, but at the other end of the field Richarlison lay prone to leave Postecoglou's team further depleted.

Already without record signing Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert in attacking areas, Tottenham never looked capable of mounting the threat they needed to survive the Liverpool onslaught.

The decisive blow came five minutes into the second half when Kinsky rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Darwin Nunez and caught the Uruguayan.

Salah ruthlessly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner for his 26th goal of the season.

Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch fired off the post as Liverpool put their foot down to kill the tie off.

The killer third goal came 15 minutes from time when Connor Bradley, who excelled in the absence of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, played in Szoboszlai to slot home.

Van Dijk then exposed Spurs' struggles defending set-pieces by heading in the fourth from a corner to rub salt in the visitors' wounds.

Newcastle are eying an end to their own 56-year wait for a major trophy after an impressive 4-0 humbling of Arsenal on aggregate in the other semi-final.

But the Magpies have the unenviable task of stopping Slot's juggernaut if they are to do so.

Randal Kolo Muani continued his fine start at Juventus with both goals in Sunday's 4-1 win in Turin, as champions Inter Milan gear up for a crunch derby with AC Milan.

France striker Kolo Muani struck twice in three minutes in the second half, with Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceicao netting late on with Empoli down to 10 men, as Juve bounced back from going behind early and moved into Italy's Champions League positions.

Lazio are a point behind Juve and will reclaim fourth place if they win at struggling Cagliari on Monday night.

"The players deserved to win, they played with courage and as a team. They took on responsibility on the pitch," said Motta to DAZN.

"It's a strong, united group of players that's moving forward. Let's look ahead to the next match."

Thiago Motta's inconsistent side had been showered with boos and whistles after going in at half-time trailing to a fourth-minute header from old boy Mattia De Sciglio.

But Kolo Muani, who opened his Juve account on his debut in last weekend's defeat at league leaders Napoli, levelled the scores in the 61st minute when he brushed past Saba Goglichidze and confidently finished from close range.

The 26-year-old then put the hosts in front in fortuitous fashion three minutes later when he diverted Timothy Weah's wayward distance effort past the despairing grasp of Devis Vasquez.

Empoli went down to 10 when Youssef Maleh was sent off with six minutes remaining after picking up two bookings, the second for a wild challenge on Nicolas Gonzalez.

And Vlahovic, who was dropped for Kolo Muani and is tipped to leave Juve in the summer, lashed in his first goal since mid-December in the 90th minute before Conceicao rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Sunday's display was far from convincing however and met with muted celebrations at the final whistle as Empoli are a point and place above the relegation zone and have now collected two points from their last eight matches.

Later Inter can pile pressure on Napoli when they take on a Milan team in disarray, with Simone Inzaghi's in-form side looking for a first derby win of the season at the third attempt.

A win at a packed San Siro, which will be missing some of its colour due to a police ban on pre-match fan displays, would move Inter level on 53 points with Napoli who are at fierce rivals Roma in the day's late fixture.

The stand-covering displays have been banned by the Italian police's serious crime unit DIGOS as part of a crackdown on the hardcore ultra supporters of the two clubs.

In September, 19 leading ultras from Milan and Inter were arrested as part of a probe into illegal profits made around matches and the infiltration of mafia gangs into supporters groups.

On Thursday Inter will also complete their away fixture at Fiorentina which was stopped in December following Viola midfielder Edoardo Bove's on-pitch collapse.

Kylian Mbappe struck twice and produced a brilliant performance to power Real Madrid to a 4-1 win over Las Palmas and take the reigning champions top of La Liga on Sunday.

Los Blancos enjoyed a perfect weekend, overtaking Atletico Madrid by two points after their neighbours slipped up with a shock defeat at Leganes on Saturday, while Barcelona, third, could only draw at Getafe.

Mbappe has hit top form in recent weeks after an inconsistent start to life at Real Madrid following his dream switch from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

The 26-year-old reached 12 league goals with his brace, becoming the Spanish league's second top-scorer behind Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski, with Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo Goes also on target.

"It was a very important game because we knew what had happened yesterday, with Atletico and Barca, we wanted to win and we did," Mbappe told Real Madrid TV.

"We started badly, letting in a goal (so early)... but the reaction was top.

"We got the ball forward, quickly, attacking the spaces and with quality, we scored a lot of goals... we're happy because we're leaders."

Mbappe has 18 goals for the season in 30 appearances across all competitions, and is looking increasingly crucial for his side in attack.

With Vinicius Junior suspended, the spotlight was on the French forward at the Santiago Bernabeu and he delivered with a sparkling performance.

"I am very happy, I have adapted to the team and I can play how I want, with my team-mates, with personality," continued Mbappe.

"I think that we are all enjoying it."

Madrid were thrashed by Barcelona last week in the Spanish Super Cup final, leading to some whistles for the team when they played at home in midweek in the Copa del Rey.

Mbappe posted on social media network Instagram to encourage the fans to stick together and support the team.

"I think we have to be united, and like that, we can go for all the trophies," he explained.

Las Palmas took a surprise lead in just over 30 seconds when a rapid move sliced open Madrid's defence.

Sandro Ramirez crossed for Fabio Silva to apply the finishing touch from close range.

- Strong response -

Madrid hit back strongly, with Diaz shooting wide when he should have scored, and Mbappe's fierce effort tipped away by Jasper Cillessen.

Mbappe, who came in for heavy criticism after missing two penalties towards the end of 2024, levelled from the spot after Sandro clumsily felled Rodrygo.

The striker was involved in Madrid's second goal, with the rebound from his saved shot falling to Lucas Vazquez, who squared for Diaz to convert.

Mbappe netted his second with a fine finish which arced into the top corner after Rodrygo cut the ball back.

Mbappe thought he had completed his hat-trick before the break but the goal was ruled offside in the build-up.

Jude Bellingham hit the side-netting early in the second half when he should have scored, but Madrid's fourth goal did not take long to arrive.

Rodrygo stroked home from Fran Garcia's low cross after Mbappe played the left-back in.

Bellingham and Fede Valverde had strikes ruled out for offside as Madrid continued to dominate, and they were able to welcome David Alaba back as a substitute after more than a year out with a serious knee injury.

"(Alaba) is a player who can help us a lot, you don't know how much it means for us to have him back on the pitch with us," Madrid's Dani Ceballos told DAZN.

Midfielder Ceballos had one of his best games for Madrid and was given an ovation by the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I have worked, waited for my moment, and now I have to keep working," he added.

Manchester United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton as Old Trafford remembered the legendary Denis Law on Sunday, while Tottenham's troubles also persisted as they lost 3-2 at Everton.

Manchester City roared back into form with a 6-0 thrashing of Ipswich, while Nottingham Forest's unlikely title challenge goes on after a 3-2 victory over Southampton took Nuno Espirito Santo's men level with second-placed Arsenal.

On an emotional day as United paid tribute to one of the club's greatest ever players in Law, Ruben Amorim conceded this version of the Red Devils is the "worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United."

A thrilling 2-2 draw at Liverpool and FA Cup victory over Arsenal earlier this month look like another false dawn for United fans.

After Amad Diallo's late hat-trick papered over the cracks in a 3-1 win over bottom-of-the-table Southampton in midweek, Brighton exposed the glaring holes in the foundations of Amorim's United project.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter struck for the Seagulls, who won for the third consecutive season at Old Trafford.

United remain 13th but enjoy a 10-point cushion over the bottom three.

"We can't be comfortable in thinking that this is ok, because it is not," said United captain Bruno Fernandes.

"I'm not here to lose games and be in the position we are in at the moment."

Before kick-off, tributes were paid to Law, who is the third top scorer in United's history, with 237 goals in 404 appearances.

A piper played Scottish anthem "Flower of Scotland" as the teams walked out, with United legends Alex Ferguson, Brian Kidd, Paddy Crerand and Alex Stepney on the pitch as a eulogy was read out over the tannoy.

- Spurs winless in six -

Tottenham are now winless in six league games after Everton boosted their survival chances with the first victory of David Moyes' second spell in charge.

The goal-shy Toffees had failed to score in nine of their previous 11 league games but struck three times before the break.

Dominic Calvert Lewin's first goal since September opened the scoring before a brilliant individual run and finish from Iliman Ndiaye.

Archie Gray's own goal compounded Tottenham's misery.

Late goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison reduced Spurs' deficit but could not prevent a 12th defeat in 22 games.

"It is a challenging situation for sure, when you are losing players the amount we are at the moment," said under-fire Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who was without 10 first-team regulars.

"It's up to me to get us out of it and I've got to be good enough to do that."

Everton pull four points clear of the bottom three and within four points of 15th-placed Tottenham.

City began the day in eighth, but looked much more like their old selves in smashing Ipswich to climb back into the top four.

Phil Foden continued his fine form with two first half goals, either side of Mateo Kovacic's strike.

Erling Haaland celebrated his nine-year contract extension by scoring in the second half, while Jeremy Doku and James McAtee were also on target for the defending champions.

Forest were equally rampant in the first 45 minutes to cut the gap on leaders Liverpool to six points and consolidate their lead in the race for a place in the Champions League next season.

Elliot Anderson, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood netted before the break.

Southampton salvaged some pride in the second period through Jan Bednarek and Paul Onuachu but they remain on course for an immediate return to the Championship, 10 points adrift of safety.

Milan (Italy) (AFP) – Inter Milan moved to within one point of Serie A leaders Napoli on Sunday after bouncing back from a painful defeat in the Italian Super Cup final by winning 1-0 at struggling Venezia and going second in the table.

Matteo Darmian shot the injury-hit champions to victory on the Venetian Lagoon with the only goal of the game in the 16th minute, moving Inter a point above Atalanta who were held to a goalless draw at Udinese on Saturday.

Italy defender Darmian tapped home his second goal of the season on the rebound after Lautaro Martinez's shot was kept out by Venezia goalkeeper and Inter loanee Filip Stankovic.

"We work on getting up the pitch and it doesn't matter who gets there. I found myself in front of goal and thankfully I managed to score and help the team win," said Darmian.

Napoli can extend their lead at the top of the division to four points with a home win over Verona, although Antonio Conte will be without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who has asked to be sold, with an 80-million-euro ($82 million) transfer to Paris Saint-Germain reportedly in the works.

However Inter will have two games in hand, the first against Bologna on Wednesday and the other their December fixture at Fiorentina which was stopped, following Edoardo Bove's collapse on the pitch, and has yet to be rescheduled.

Inter have had problems closing out matches this season and Sunday's narrow win, their sixth on the bounce in Serie A, came after Simone Inzaghi's side threw away a two-goal lead in the Italian Super Cup final against AC Milan.

The away side dominated and should have won by more despite having Italy defender Francesco Acerbi and key midfielders Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan out injured, with Marcus Thuram, Benjamin Pavard and Federico Dimarco starting on the bench.

But Stankovic, the son of Inter legend Dejan, was excellent between the sticks and his brilliant save from Davide Frattesi in the 67th minute almost paid off moments later when the post denied USA midfielder Gianluca Busio and allowed Inter to escape with all three points.

"It wasn't easy after losing the final the way we did, but the boys were brilliant because we came here tired with a host of players out but we played really well," said Inzaghi.

Vieira's Genoa on the up

Genoa continued their revival under Patrick Vieira with their first home win of the season, 1-0 over relegation rivals Parma, in front of new majority shareholder Dan Sucu.

Morten Frendrup's wildly deflected strike in the 65th minute gave Genoa their third win since France and Arsenal icon Vieira replaced Alberto Gilardino in November.

Genoa are up to 11th, level on 23 points with Roma who are at Bologna later on Sunday, and five points above the relegation zone after their first victory at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris since the final day of last season.

"We played well from the first minute to the last, everyone was waiting for this win for 233 days and we did it with a great performance," said Vieira.

It was a propitious first appearance in front of home fans for Sucu who took over Genoa last month after he subscribed to a 45-million-euro capital increase which gave him 77 percent of the club.

That operation brought to an end the ownership of controversial investment company 777 Partners, who acquired 99.9 percent of Genoa in September 2021 but were issued with a winding up order by the United Kingdom's High Court last year.

Sucu's ownership is contested by another investment firm and 777 creditor, Advantage Capital (A-Cap), who say they were Genoa's rightful owners after taking control of 777's football assets.

A-Cap called the arrival of Sucu, who also owns Rapid Bucharest, a "non-approved clandestine operation" before Genoa said the takeover was final and that any news to the contrary was false.

Parma are a point and place above the bottom three and face three key clashes with fellow strugglers Venezia, Lecce and Cagliari in the next few weeks.

Manchester City dashed the dreams of Salford's former Manchester United star owners with an 8-0 FA Cup rout on Saturday, while Liverpool cruised into the fourth round with a 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.

Chelsea were among the other big winners with a 5-0 demolition of Morecambe.

Brentford were the only Premier League side to fall to lower-league opposition as Plymouth, who sit bottom of the Championship, stunned the Bees 1-0 thanks to Morgan Whittaker's late winner.

League Two Salford have risen through the non-league ranks since investment from David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt began in 2014.

Scholes, Butt and director of football Giggs were in attendance at the Etihad but were denied a night to rival their best during glorious playing careers at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola made wholesale changes as Erling Haaland was afforded a rest.

Jeremy Doku opened the scoring after just eight minutes before youngsters Divin Mubama and Nico O'Reilly made it 3-0 before half-time.

Jack Grealish scored his first City goal for over a year from the penalty spot, while Doku also netted from the spot.

But James McAtee, who had only scored once for City previously, earned man-of-the-match honours with a 20-minute second half hat-trick.

"I've been here since I was 10 and it's a special moment for me. Something I'll remember forever," said McAtee.

- Alexander-Arnold leads by example -

There was never any hint of an upset at Anfield either despite Arne Slot making eight changes for Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was named captain in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and led by example after being criticised for his display in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United last weekend.

Slot had warned the Premier League leaders that a trip to Anfield would be Accrington's "Champions League final".

A mammoth 86 league positions behind Liverpool in the 92-team English league system, Stanley held out for nearly half an hour before Diogo Jota was left with a simple task to tap in from Darwin Nunez's low cross.

Alexander-Arnold then stepped forward to double the lead with a sumptuous hit into the top corner from outside the box.

"I could talk for hours about that (goal), unbelievable," said Slot.

"The biggest compliment Trent could get was the reaction of everyone after the Manchester United game.

"Every player around the world, maybe except for a few, has a bad game and that is completely normal, but the moment Trent has one, everyone has an opinion about it."

Jayden Danns made it 3-0 before Federico Chiesa netted his first Liverpool goal after an injury-hit start to his time in England.

Joao Felix was the star of the show for Chelsea as he got a rare chance to deputise for Cole Palmer.

The Portuguese international and Tosin Adarabioyo both scored twice, while Christopher Nkunku made up for missing an early penalty by netting his 13th goal of the season.

- Brentford stung -

Only Liverpool have taken more points at home than Brentford in the Premier League this season, while Plymouth had not won away from home all campaign.

Yet against the odds Argyle, who sacked former England captain Wayne Rooney 12 days ago, held out and hit Thomas Frank's men with a sucker punch when Whittaker blasted in from outside the area nine minutes from time.

"I have pride in everybody, and I'm pleased for the supporters. It's a big day for us," said caretaker Plymouth boss Kevin Nancekivell.

"The FA Cup brings that romance and we've put a little bit of history in it today by getting the win."

High-flying Nottingham Forest continued their excellent season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Luton.

Brighton were 4-0 winners at Norwich as Georginio Rutter struck twice.

Bournemouth shrugged off the loss of strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal to long-term injuries this week to roar back from 1-0 down to hammer West Brom 5-1.

Leicester went one better by hitting QPR for six in an eight-goal thriller at the King Power.

Wolves' bright start under new boss Vitor Pereira continued as early goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rodrigo Gomes secured a 2-1 win at Bristol City.

RIYADH, Jan 6 (Reuters) - A goal in added time from Tammy Abraham completed a stunning comeback for AC Milan who won the Italian Super Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory over city rivals Inter Milan in Monday's final in Riyadh after going two goals down early in the game.

The win denied Inter what would have been an unprecedented fourth consecutive Super Cup trophy, and allowed Milan to equal Inter's haul of eight wins in the competition, with new manager Serge Conceicao lifting a trophy in his second game in charge.

The game was preceded by a spectacular light show at the King Saud University Stadium but the match only really sparked into life in the final seconds of the opening half.

Mehdi Taremi teed up Lautaro Martinez with a pass across the box and the forward used some neat footwork to deceive Malick Thiaw before firing a low shot through the legs of Theo Hernandez which beat Mike Maignan at his near post.

Two minutes after the interval Inter continued where they had left off. Stefan de Vrij played a long ball over the top which Taremi controlled beautifully and he drilled his shot into the bottom corner to double their advantage.

Milan responded by sending on Rafael Leao, who immediately won a free kick just outside the area which Hernandez curled low around the wall and the ball crept just inside the post to re-open the tie.

A rejuvenated Milan pushed for an equaliser. Tijjani Reijnders had a shot blocked by the face of Alessandro Bastoni and Inter keeper Yann Sommer pulled off a fine save from an Alvaro Morata header.

Inter then had a chance to restore their two-goal advantage, but Carlos Augusto's header from close range came off the upright and into the arms of Maignan on the goal-line, but Milan found the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining.

Christian Pulisic, surrounded by three Inter players, controlled a cross from Hernandez and steered his shot into the far corner and it looked like the tie would be decided by a shootout, with no extra time to be played.

Milan, however, continued to press and they were rewarded when Leao pulled the ball back across the goal and Abraham, another substitute, was there for the simplest of tap-ins to break Inter hearts.

Conceicao, who replaced the sacked Paulo Fonseca last week, celebrated wildly with his players, while the Inter team slumped to the floor in disbelief.

SOUTHAMPTON, England, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Brentford thrashed relegation favourites Southampton 5-0 on Saturday to chalk up a long-overdue first away win of the Premier League season, helped by a Bryan Mbeumo double.

Kevin Schade put the mid-table visitors ahead in the sixth minute at St Mary's, the German forward flicking the ball past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after being fed through by Mikkel Damsgaard.

Cameroon international Mbeumo doubled the tally in the 62nd and added the third goal from the penalty spot in the 69th before then providing the assist for Keane Lewis-Potter in the second minute of stoppage time.

Yoane Wissa made it 5-0 in the fourth of five additional minutes with his 10th league goal of the campaign after earlier squandering a hatful of chances.

Brentford could have been comfortably ahead even in the first half-hour, with a Christian Norgaard header bouncing off the crossbar and Ramsdale making a low save to parry a curling Wissa effort.

Last in the league with six points from 20 matches, Southampton have only one win to their credit -- 1-0 at home to Everton more than two months ago -- and are 10 points from safety with the fewest goals in the top flight.

The meagre six points matches Sunderland's dismal 2005-06 tally as the worst in the Premier League era at this stage of the season.

New manager Ivan Juric, appointed last month , has lost all three games in charge so far.
"I am very disappointed with the performance, disappointed in the team, in myself. We didn't do anything well today," the former AS Roma boss told Sky Sports television.

"Very bad performance and it was too big a difference between the two teams.
"After this game it's normal that you have questions about your work. It will be big a motivation to change the situation but in this moment I can say I didn't change the situation and I am very sorry for that."

Brentford, now 10th in the table, thought they had scored their second goal in the 53rd when Sepp van den Berg headed in unmarked from an Mbeumo corner but a VAR check ruled that Wissa had fouled Jan Bednarek moments earlier.

Wissa was clear on goal seven minutes later but, one-on-one with Ramsdale, blasted the ball high over the bar.

Mbeumo then found the net after a one-two with Wissa and put the match beyond the struggling Saints from the spot, with his 13th league goal of the season, after Van den Berg was downed clumsily by Lesley Ugochukwu at the far post.

Wissa, in the 72nd, and Lewis-Potter two minutes later also missed good chances before both made amends in extra time as Southampton's porous defence gave way.

Birmingham (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Aston Villa beat crisis-hit Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday to heap more misery on floundering manager Pep Guardiola, who has now suffered nine defeats in his past 12 matches.

Jhon Duran finished off a fine team move to give the home side an early lead and Morgan Rogers doubled Villa's advantage in the 65th minute.

Phil Foden scored his first Premier League goal of the season in stoppage time to pull one back but it proved to be too little too late.

Guardiola, in the worst run of his glittering career, said Friday that "sooner or later" things will turn around but City's fear factor has vanished and they have just one win in their past 12 games in all competitions.

City have now lost six Premier League games in the current campaign, twice as many as they suffered during the whole of last season, when they were crowned champions for a fourth straight season.

They have dropped to sixth in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Liverpool having played two games more, while Villa leapfrogged them into fifth.

Guardiola said he trusted his players despite their shocking form.

"It depends on us," he told the BBC. "The solution is bring the players back. We have just one central defender fit, that is difficult."

"We have to think positive and I have incredible trust in the guys," he added. "Some of them have incredible pride and desire to do it. We have to find a way, step by step, sooner or later to find a way back."

Guardiola made six changes to the team side that lost last week's Manchester derby, bringing in goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and reshaping his defence with Rico Lewis, John Stones and Manuel Akanji.

Mateo Kovacic and Jack Grealish also returned.

But the defending champions started the match in chaotic fashion and could have been behind with just 15 seconds on the clock.

Untidy work from Josko Gvardiol allowed John McGinn to steal the ball and he fed Duran, whose shot from outside the box was pushed behind by Ortega.

Villa were millimetres away from taking the lead from the resulting corner, with Ortega, in for injured first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, producing a superb save to deny Pau Torres.

City then settled and their possession numbers topped 75 percent but they created little.
Duran strikes again

Instead it was Villa who took the lead in the 16th minute through Duran after a superb team move.

Youri Tielemans delivered a wonderful defence-splitting pass to Rogers, who burst through City's backline with ease before squaring for Duran and the Colombian international finished crisply for his seventh Premier League goal of the season.

Foden tested Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the 35th minute after an incisive move involving Lewis.

And Gvardiol squandered a glorious chance moments before half-time, heading a Grealish cross over the bar.

Guardiola brought on Kyle Walker for Stones at the break but Villa again took control, this time enjoying much more of the ball.

Minutes into the second half Matty Cash lashed an attempt into the side netting after a speedy attack before Duran had a strike ruled out for offside.

Rogers, formerly of Manchester City, hit the foot of the post just before the hour mark after an intricate team move down the left.

But Emery's men doubled their lead 20 minutes into the second half, with Rogers finishing unerringly from a McGinn pass.

City created little as they searched for a way back into the game until Foden pounced for a late consolation goal.

Emery told TNT Sports that Villa were "feeling strong".

"We played the first half very well," he said. "In the second half we kept possession more and getting in the box to score the second goal, we imposed and dominated more."

DORTMUND, Germany, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Substitute Ferran Torres scored twice including an 85th-minute winner as Barcelona earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday to move to the brink of qualification.

In a pulsating five-goal second half, Torres struck twice in 10 minutes after coming on in the 71st minute to lift Barcelona to 15 points, in second place with two games remaining in the league phase.

Dortmund twice came from a goal down with Serhou Guirassy scoring both goals but they could not do it a third time after Torres grabbed his second after being teed up by Lamine Yamal.

The Germans dropped to ninth in the standings on 12 points, with the top eight earning automatic qualification to the round of 16.

"We can be very happy with what we have done," Barca coach Hansi Flick told reporters. "The first half was wonderful and in the second half, when they scored, we remained calm and solid.

"Dortmund played very well with players who have a high pace but we did it well. We conceded goals because of mistakes we made. We can always improve, but today I have to say congratulations to the team because they did it really well," he said.

Barcelona bossed possession from the start and captain Raphinha and top scorer Robert Lewandowski had early chances.

The hosts responded with an opportunity of their own through Marcel Sabitzer but it was Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel who was kept busy in a largely one-sided first half as the visitors enjoyed close to 70% possession.

Dortmund looked sharper after the break and Guirassy put the ball in the net in the 50th minute before the effort was ruled out for offside.

There was nothing wrong, however, when Raphinha latched on to a superb Dani Olmo pass to finish off a quick move in the 53rd minute and put Barcelona in the driving seat with his sixth goal of the competition.

The hosts levelled through Guirassy's well-taken penalty on the hour after the Guinea international was brought down in the box before Dortmund's Kobel came to the rescue once more, stopping another Olmo shot.

He was beaten in the 75th when Torres, who had come on four minutes earlier, slotted in on the rebound after Kobel had punched a Frenkie de Jong volley into his path.

Guirassy hit back three minutes later when the Barca defence was caught napping but it was not enough to earn a point as Torres scored again after a superb through ball from Yamal.

There was more bad news for injury-plagued Dortmund after defender Nico Schlotterbeck turned his ankle following a header in the last move of the game and had to be carried off on a stretcher after the final whistle.

FIFA on Wednesday officially confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 men’s World Cup.

The FIFA Congress meeting also confirmed Morocco, Spain and Portugal as hosts of the 2030 World Cup with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay hosting celebratory games.

The congress made the vote in a virtual online meeting.

Saudi Arabia announced its intention to bid on October 4, 2023 and a formal letter of intent was sent to FIFA on October 9, 2023. It became the sole bidder in October of that year when Australia pulled out of the race

Saudi Arabia will become the second Middle Eastern nation to host the tournament, after neighboring Qatar staged the 2022 edition.

The win will further solidify the Kingdom’s global presence on the sports scene as Saudi Arabia rapidly develops this sector.

A recent FIFA Bid Evaluation Report awarded the Kingdom’s bid to host the World Cup 2034 a rating of 419.8 out of 500, which is the “highest technical score awarded by FIFA to any bid to host the World Cup in history,” according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Saudi Arabia’s bidding campaign slogan “Growing. Together,” unveiled plans to host the world’s first 48-team FIFA World Cup to be held in one country. It proposes that the matches are held across 15 stadiums in five host cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and NEOM, in addition to 10 other host locations across the Kingdom.

There are eight proposed stadiums in Riyadh, four in Jeddah and one in each of Abha, NEOM and al-Khobar.

For instance, Riyadh will host the opening and final matches at the King Salman Stadium, which will be able to accommodate over 92,000 spectators once constructed.

The King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh is also among the proposed stadiums. Known for its distinctive fabric roof inspired by traditional tents, it has the capacity of around 70,000 seats.

Saudi Arabia was also chosen to host the 2027 Asian Football Cup, and the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a mountain resort in Neom.
