President Donald Trump is scheduled to undertake his inaugural flight on a new Air Force One aircraft, a gift from Qatar, later this week. The White House confirmed the plan on Monday.
The President will travel to North Dakota on Wednesday aboard the modified Boeing 747 to attend an event commemorating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. This announcement was made by a White House official to Agence France-Presse.
Earlier this month, President Trump publicly expressed gratitude towards Qatar for its "so nice and providing" contribution of the aircraft, which was previously utilized by the Qatari head of state. Trump, throughout his presidency, has shown considerable interest in upgrading the aging presidential aircraft and personally selected the new plane's distinctive red, white, and blue color scheme.
However, the acceptance of the aircraft, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, from a foreign nation like Qatar has drawn significant criticism. Concerns have been raised regarding potential ethical, constitutional, and security implications. The U.S. Constitution stipulates that presidents and other officials are prohibited from accepting gifts from foreign states without congressional approval.
The Trump administration has asserted that the aircraft is a direct donation to the U.S. Department of Defense. Further controversy arose from statements suggesting the plane would eventually be transferred to President Trump's presidential library.
This Qatari-supplied jet is intended to serve as a temporary measure until Boeing delivers two new 747-8 aircraft specifically designed for presidential use. The program for these new aircraft has been marked by considerable delays and budget overruns.
