An adult bald eagle found injured near Big Bear Lake over the weekend is believed to be "Jackie," a prominent figure in a long-running nest livestream, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, the wildlife nonprofit operating the camera.
The nonprofit stated on social media that evidence from public sightings and rescuers strongly suggests the rescued eagle is Jackie. The bird is currently receiving necessary care at a specialized rehabilitation facility. Jackie and her mate, "Shadow," have been featured on the webcam since 2015, chronicling their struggles with egg and offspring loss, as well as successful fledglings.
The grounded bald eagle was initially observed near Dana Point Park in Fawnskin on Thursday and Friday. Reports indicate the adult eagle was involved in a confrontation with two sub-adult eagles, managing to defend itself with its talons but was unable to fly away effectively. Friends of Big Bear Valley noted that Jackie had not been seen near the nest for several days prior.
Personnel from the L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue collected the injured eagle on Saturday. The agency confirmed on Facebook that a collaborative effort ensured the bird received prompt and appropriate care. The rescue team is now focused on the eagle's rehabilitation.
The news has prompted significant concern among fans of the Big Bear bald eagles, who have closely followed the pair's lives online. Friends of Big Bear Valley urged the public to disregard misinformation and speculation, and advised against contacting the rescue agency directly due to limited resources.
