Man United Eyes Defensive Midfielder Amid Transfer Rebuild

Manchester United is reportedly targeting a defensive midfielder to complete their transfer window business, prioritizing strength, athleticism, and ball-carrying ability over players already comfortable in possession.

The club is said to be moving away from a long-standing target, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that any move for a previous target is "100% off." Instead, United are evaluating several alternatives to add a crucial piece to their midfield rebuild, which has already seen the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

Romano indicated on YouTube that while Roma's Manu Koné is on United's radar, he is not the only player being considered. The club has reportedly made contact with Koné's agents but has yet to submit a bid to Roma or engage in club-to-club discussions. The ideal profile for this third midfield signing is described as "defensive, physical, who can break the lines, who can be an important player in that sense."

The focus on a defensive specialist comes as the squad already boasts players adept at controlling possession. The missing element is seen as someone capable of shielding the defense, winning duels, and driving the team forward under pressure. Reports suggest Manchester United is keen to avoid rushing into another expensive acquisition and will assess the market carefully.

While Koné appears to be a strong candidate due to his power and defensive energy, Manchester United is reportedly exploring other options, with Alex Scott and Eduardo Camavinga also mentioned as players admired by manager Michael Carrick. The club's strategy seems to be finding a midfielder who complements existing strengths and enhances tactical flexibility, rather than simply replacing a departed target at an inflated price.
