A 19-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing a 73-year-old art gallery manager in what authorities describe as a random act of violence outside a California mall. The victim, Rachell Summers, was reportedly attacked without provocation by the suspect, Tyler Leibelt, who had no prior connection to her.
Summers died from multiple stab wounds following the incident, which occurred at 12:47 p.m. on Monday near the food court exit of the Capitola Mall in Santa Cruz County. Capitola Police Department officers arrived to find Summers injured on an adjacent street and attempted lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Tyler Leibelt of Santa Cruz has been charged with murder, along with sentencing enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon and killing while lying in wait. Police located Leibelt approximately half a mile from the crime scene on 41st Avenue.
Detectives currently believe the attack was random, with no evidence suggesting the suspect and victim knew each other. Summers managed the Art of Santa Cruz gallery located within the Capitola Mall. The gallery announced on Instagram that it would remain closed until Saturday due to the tragedy, stating, "We are mourning the loss of our gallery manager, Rachell Summers."
The unprovoked nature of the attack has deeply affected the local community. Residents shared their grief and memories of Summers on social media, recalling her as a "delight to talk with" and expressing that her presence will be missed. A memorial has reportedly been established outside the mall to honor the artist. A co-worker, Marilyn Gwynn, described the loss as overwhelming to a local news station, KSBW.
