Residents in Gaza are being forced to evacuate their homes repeatedly due to the advancement of Israel's "yellow line," a demarcation indicating expanding military zones, leading to further displacement and hardship in the ongoing conflict.
In Gaza City's Zeitoun district, residents like Assem Dawla have been compelled to move their belongings multiple times since the war began, citing Israeli evacuation orders and the encroachment of the yellow line. This demarcation, established under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in October, is reportedly being moved forward by Israeli forces in at least five locations across Gaza, according to residents and Hamas officials.
The expansion of Israeli-controlled areas has intensified displacement, with residents in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, Zeitoun, Tuffah, Shejaia, and northern Rafah reporting that the yellow block markers have advanced in recent days. Warnings of evacuation have been communicated to residents through text messages and drone-mounted loudspeakers, prompting them to gather salvaged belongings and seek shelter elsewhere.
The Israeli military stated that its forces are deployed to protect Israel from attack and that the yellow line is clearly marked to minimize risks to civilians. "IDF's (Israel Defense Forces) defensive posture in the area includes a security zone, a physical barrier, intelligence capabilities, technological means, and operational activity by IDF troops," a military spokesperson said.
For many Gazans, the experience has become a cycle of displacement. Families gather what little remains of their possessions after previous relocations, often moving after dark to areas designated as safe by the Israeli military. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on July 20 that an Israeli displacement order in Zeitoun forced 30 families from their tents, which were subsequently destroyed.
Dawla described the pervasive nature of the displacement, stating, "The whole war is displacement, displacement. You can't stay anywhere without (Israel) telling you, ‘Get out of here, we want to come in.'" The situation underscores the dire humanitarian conditions and the constant uncertainty faced by the majority of Gaza's population.
