San Francisco startup Opal Camera is pivoting hard into AI hardware, rebranding as Opal Electronics and gearing up to launch a new AI-powered audio gadget thanks to a massive $40 million Series B investment from OpenAI.

Previously known for its sleek webcams, Opal is now aiming to become a major player in consumer electronics, taking cues from brands like Sony. The company wants to stand out with a focus on design and culture, not just cutting-edge tech.

This significant funding round, which closed in early 2025, saw participation from other big names like Samsung, Peter Thiel, and tech influencer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD). Opal is now valued at around $275 million.

The investment was spurred by a close relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. After an early visit to Opal's offices to discuss integrating OpenAI's Whisper model into their webcams, the Opal team was reportedly shown a preview of ChatGPT. This encounter deeply impressed them, reportedly leading to the company's strategic shift toward AI research.

Opal's upcoming AI audio product, currently in testing with Altman and executives from xAI and Anthropic, is slated to launch in the next three to four months. While details are scarce, it's described as a familiar product category, not intended to replace smartphones. Opal is also planning two other product releases within the next year and aims to open-source designs upon product end-of-life.

Despite the buzz around AI hardware, many recent attempts like the Humane Ai Pin and Rabbit R1 have struggled. Opal, however, seems to be adopting a more cautious approach, promising to "deliver beyond" initial expectations, a stark contrast to some of its competitors.
