Lebanese President: Iran Uses Lebanon as US Bargaining Chip

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has accused Iran of utilizing Lebanon as a bargaining chip in its negotiations with the United States, expressing strong criticism of Tehran and its ally Hezbollah amidst ongoing conflict with Israel.

In an interview with CNN, Aoun stated that the Lebanese populace is bearing the consequences for Iran's strategic interests and is weary of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. He specifically articulated that Iran is employing Lebanon in its diplomatic exchanges with the U.S., deeming the situation "unacceptable."

Hezbollah, established by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, initiated the current hostilities over three months ago in support of Iran following attacks by the U.S. and Israel. President Aoun, a Maronite Christian and former head of the Lebanese military, has advocated for the peaceful disarmament of Hezbollah since his election and previously called for direct talks with Israel, positions that have created friction with the group.

Iran has reportedly stipulated a ceasefire in Lebanon as a prerequisite for any broader regional peace agreement with Washington, particularly following an attack on Tehran on February 28. Recently, Hezbollah rejected a ceasefire proposal that had been agreed upon by Lebanese and Israeli officials during U.S.-mediated discussions in Washington. This proposal was contingent on Hezbollah ceasing fire and withdrawing its fighters from southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem asserted in a statement that the Washington agreement was opposed by "broad segments of the Lebanese people." In response, President Aoun directly addressed Qassem, stating, "The Lebanese people are not your people."

Lebanese authorities report that Israeli attacks have resulted in thousands of fatalities and displaced approximately 1.2 million people in Lebanon since March. Israeli forces currently occupy a significant area in southern Lebanon.
