A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster after he stabbed one of the deputies.
Deputies were dispatched to Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway at approximately 2 p.m. following a report of an individual armed with a knife. Upon arrival, the suspect attacked and stabbed one of the responding deputies.
The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-critical. The suspect was subsequently struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The Sheriff's Department has not specified whether the deputy who was stabbed was also the one who discharged their weapon.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated, "We are grateful that our deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be returning home to their loved ones. Incidents like this are a stark reminder that every day, law enforcement professionals like our Deputies step into unpredictable and rapidly evolving situations in service to protecting our communities."
Neither the wounded deputy nor the deceased suspect have been publicly identified. As per standard procedure in incidents involving a deputy-involved shooting, the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau have initiated separate investigations. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office will review the case to determine the justification of the shooting and whether any criminal charges will be filed.
