Zurich Airport Disruptions Linked to Iran Talks Security Measures

A technical fault in air traffic control systems at Zurich Airport, caused by security arrangements for U.S.-Iran peace talks in Switzerland, led to flight disruptions on Sunday. Aviation authorities confirmed the issue has since been resolved.

The disruption stemmed from the last-minute integration of a no-fly zone over Buergenstock, the Swiss mountain resort hosting the negotiations, into radar display systems. Skyguide, Switzerland's air traffic control authority, stated that the restricted zone was implemented because the decision to proceed with the latest round of talks was only finalized on Saturday.

Operations at the airport have since returned to normal, according to Skyguide. A spokesperson for the airport reported that by midday, 12 arrivals and 14 departures had been cancelled, with at least 60 departures experiencing delays.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived at Buergenstock on Sunday for the peace talks. The diplomatic engagement was notably preceded by Iran's announcement of the reimposition of its blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. The Swiss resort, situated approximately 50 kilometers south of Zurich Airport, was selected to provide a "discreet and reliable setting" for the discussions.
