Tottenham are reportedly in direct contact with the agent of highly-rated Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed. Spurs are keen to make a statement signing this summer and are actively pursuing the West Ham star.

Romano shared the latest on Fernandes' future, stating that Tottenham have initiated conversations with the player's prominent agent, Jorge Mendes. The North London club is pushing to agree on personal terms, aiming to get ahead of rival suitors.

However, Romano stressed that nothing is set in stone yet. He noted that Manchester United are also heavily involved, working hard on both club and player negotiations with West Ham and Mendes. The midfielder was also reportedly recommended by José Mourinho to Real Madrid as a potential midfield addition.

West Ham United, aware of the intense interest, has slapped a hefty starting price tag of £85 million on Fernandes, anticipating a bidding war that could push the fee even higher. The club believes more suitors will join the race daily.

Adding a twist to the saga, it's understood that Fernandes is enjoying his life in London. This preference to stay in the capital could give Tottenham a significant advantage over Manchester United, provided Spurs can meet West Ham's substantial financial demands and offer a compelling project under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
