Italian startup Lorika is launching "Ontop," a line of colorful clip-on frame covers designed to personalize and protect Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses.
These aren't your grandma's specs. Ontop covers are made from polycarbonate plastic with integrated elastic polymers for a secure fit. They attach to the glasses' frames and arms, adding a noticeable pop of color and a slightly chunkier aesthetic without obstructing the cameras or speakers. Priced at $35 or $40, they're available starting today.
Giorgio Di Cesare, CEO of Lorika, explained that Ontop offers a way to stand out. "If you want something else, something different on design, something more chubby, more puffy, you can get that," he stated. While Lorika doesn't have an official partnership with Meta, Di Cesare sees a gap in the market for customization and added protection, drawing inspiration from phone cases.
Smart glasses have evolved from tech novelties to fashion statements. Unlike earlier iterations that were often seen as dorky, companies like Meta, with its partnership with EssilorLuxottica, have focused on making smart eyewear look like regular glasses. This approach helps normalize the technology, though concerns about misuse persist. Even Google is following suit, collaborating with fashion brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.
Di Cesare, a Ray-Ban Meta glasses owner himself, was motivated to create Ontop after accidentally damaging his own pair. He believes Lorika can complement the work of giants like Luxottica and Meta by offering enhanced protection and, importantly, more vibrant style options. Currently, Ontop covers are compatible with Wayfarer-style Ray-Ban Meta glasses (both first and second generation), with plans to expand to other Meta styles and eventually other brands.
Di Cesare pointed out that while Meta has succeeded in making smart glasses fashionable, the options are often limited. "The most common, most popular models are always black or dark in general," he observed. "On the color side, we're improving that for sure."
