Spurs Eye Gakpo: Liverpool Slaps £70M Price Tag on Forward

Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly interested in signing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, but the Reds are playing hardball, potentially demanding a hefty £70 million fee for the Dutch international.

While links between Spurs and Gakpo have been swirling, the move has yet to materialize, though the speculation is gaining traction. Gakpo's time at Anfield has been a bit of a mixed bag; he started strong but has seen his influence wane, making a summer sale a possibility, albeit an expensive one.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on talkSPORT, Gakpo is indeed on Tottenham's radar. However, he cautioned that a deal won't be simple, noting, "Liverpool don’t really have a desire to sell, and if anyone wants to do business with Liverpool they’re going to be pointing for example to Anthony Gordon’s £70m move from Newcastle United to Barcelona."

Jacobs highlighted the inflated market and Liverpool's high valuation of Gakpo. He also clarified that, contrary to some Dutch reports, Gakpo has not informed Liverpool of his desire to leave. Nevertheless, he advised keeping an eye on Tottenham's potential pursuit this summer.

For Gakpo, the decision is complex. While he's a talented player, his lack of consistent starts and impact at Liverpool might lead him to consider a move for more playing time. A switch to Tottenham could offer a career revitalization under an exciting manager like Roberto De Zerbi, even if it means stepping away from Champions League football with Liverpool.
