Woman Missing in Mojave Desert Amid Extreme Heat

A retired teacher has been missing for four days in a scorching Mojave Desert off-roading area, with temperatures reaching triple digits, prompting urgent search efforts by authorities and volunteers.

Julie Goforth, 63, was last seen riding her dirt bike early Friday in the El Mirage Dry Lake Off Highway Recreation Area near Adelanto. As of Tuesday morning, neither Goforth nor her motorcycle had been located. Her family is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

Goforth, an experienced rider, was reportedly trying out a new dirt bike with a friend when she became separated from him. She told her companion she was returning to their vehicle, but she never arrived. Her friend subsequently reported her missing after returning to their parked vehicle alone.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies, along with volunteers from the Victor Valley Search and Rescue Team, have deployed extensive resources, including horses, off-road vehicles, K-9 units, drones, and a helicopter. A family-organized search party, utilizing bikes, ATVs, and aircraft, also commenced on Tuesday.

The extreme heat is a significant concern, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday and Saturday. Officials fear Goforth may be without adequate water, which is crucial for survival in such conditions. Her riding partner indicated Goforth had a hydration pack with approximately one gallon of water, an amount deemed insufficient to last for an extended period.

While initial suspicions focused on a potential fall or injury, the prolonged absence and the extensive ground covered by search teams have raised concerns about the possibility of other factors contributing to her disappearance. Goforth, described as outgoing and active, recently retired from her teaching career.

Goforth is approximately 5-foot-7, weighs 140 pounds, and has blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a white shirt and black and white dirt bike attire, riding a gray and white Kawasaki KLX 300R dirt bike. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Harris at (760) 552-6800.
