Man Charged in Compton July 4th Shootings; Community Activist's Death Unsolved

A 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting at a Fourth of July party in Compton, where 19-year-old Meah Bordenave-Jenkins died and two others were injured. The death of community activist Eric Washington, 37, who was also fatally shot at the event, remains unsolved.

The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on July 4 at an apartment complex on West Laurel Street. Authorities suspect the gunman, identified as Antoine Jones, may have been targeting two documented gang members. However, in the ensuing crossfire, innocent bystanders were struck. Bordenave-Jenkins, a student studying to become a neonatal nurse, was killed at the scene. A 15-year-old and an 18-year-old sustained severe injuries but survived.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated, "On a day of community celebration and joy… vibrant young life was suddenly and horrifically taken, two others were injured, and a community was ripped apart because of senseless gun violence." He added, "We will do everything in our power to seek justice for the victims."

Eric Washington, described by his mother as energetic and community-driven, was reportedly attempting to de-escalate a conflict at the party when he was shot inside the apartment complex by an unknown assailant. His death is still under investigation. Bordenave-Jenkins, whose mother described her as intelligent, compassionate, and with a bright future, had purchased her first new car the day before the shooting.

Antoine Jones faces charges including first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He has pleaded not guilty, and his next court appearance is scheduled for July 29. Separately, authorities are investigating another fatal shooting that occurred on July 5 in Compton, which resulted in the death of 30-year-old Thaddeus Clark and injured another adult. Clark was a father of three.
