Concurrently, concerns are mounting over the security of maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command announced the initiation of "a new wave of strikes" intended to "degrade" Iran's capacity to launch attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait. While official details were limited, Iranian state media reported that U.S. missiles targeted several Iranian cities early Monday, with explosions heard in Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini.
The latest reported American casualty occurred on Sunday, when a service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. Earlier in the weekend, the U.S. military confirmed the deaths of two service members in Jordan and reported a third missing in action. Unidentified remains were discovered at the site of a previous attack and are undergoing examination.
These recent fatalities bring the total number of U.S. military personnel killed since the conflict began to 17, with over 420 wounded. In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed a surprise strike against "the enemy's special operations headquarters in Syria's Al-Tanf area." Iran had previously targeted U.S. military assets in Kuwait, including a desalination plant that suffered a fire, which Kuwait's government described as a direct strike on civilian infrastructure.
The renewed hostilities, following the unraveling of an interim ceasefire agreement, have intensified fears for energy supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude oil futures surpassed $90 a barrel, reflecting market apprehension. The U.S. Embassy in Bahrain issued a warning about potential Iranian targeting of unspecified locations in the capital, Manama.
The conflict, which commenced on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes aimed at Iran's nuclear and missile programs and regional proxies, has resulted in thousands of deaths, primarily in Iran and Lebanon. It has also caused significant disruptions to global energy supplies and exacerbated fears of worldwide inflation.
