The House, with a vote of 214-208, passed a war powers resolution, marking another instance of congressional rebuke towards President Trump. Four Republican representatives joined Democrats in supporting the resolution. This vote followed earlier instances where Congress has passed similar, largely symbolic, resolutions without leading to a halt in military engagements.
Hours after the House vote, the Senate proceeded to block its own war powers measure. The procedural vote in the Senate concluded with a 49-47 tally against the resolution. Notably, Senator Susan Collins of Maine voted with Democrats, while Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted with Republicans. Four senators abstained from voting.
The House resolution, introduced by Representative Pramila Jayapal, specifically directed President Trump to "remove the use of United States Armed Forces from hostilities" against Iran unless authorized by Congress. The four House Republicans who supported the measure were Tom Barrett of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Warren Davidson of Ohio, and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
These votes underscore a growing concern among lawmakers from both parties regarding the protracted conflict with Iran. President Trump's initial expectation of a swift capitulation from Iran has instead evolved into a complex engagement for the United States. The situation has been further complicated by recent escalations, including ramped-up attacks and reports of U.S. service member casualties.
President Trump recently announced increased actions against Iran, stating he would deliver "major military punishment" after Iranian-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. This development has extended the regional conflict to another critical shipping route. Furthermore, following the recent lapse of an interim truce, U.S. military airstrikes on Iran have been met with retaliatory fire towards U.S. bases in neighboring countries.
