A two-vehicle collision on Sunday morning near downtown Los Angeles, involving an autonomous Waymo vehicle, resulted in multiple injuries, with at least two individuals transported to local hospitals.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. in the vicinity of Venice Boulevard and Toberman Street, within the Pico-Union neighborhood. First responders confirmed that while two people were taken to hospitals, at least one other person received treatment and was released at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department has not yet confirmed the precise number of individuals injured.
Images from the accident site depict scattered debris and personal belongings. Initial reports suggested the collision may have involved a pedestrian, but the exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation. The Los Angeles Police Department stated on Sunday afternoon that their investigation was ongoing.
A spokesperson for Waymo indicated that their vehicle was not the cause of the collision. According to Waymo's account, the self-driving car was proceeding eastbound on Venice Boulevard at 27 mph when a blue sedan, traveling at an estimated 47-50 mph, struck a pedestrian outside of a designated crosswalk. The sedan then reportedly swerved into opposing traffic lanes, colliding with the Waymo vehicle.
Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher stated, "The safety of our riders and other road users is our top priority. We are coordinating with first responders and are grateful for their quick response." The cause of the crash and the extent of the injuries are still being determined as the investigation continues.
