Baghaei further clarified that any such bilateral agreement between Iran and Oman would not, on its own, ensure security within the vital strategic waterway. This proposed arrangement, according to a senior Iranian source and two regional officials, would grant Tehran oversight of vessels entering the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz, representing a significant concession to Iran.
While this development suggests a move towards accommodating Iranian demands, the sources indicated that the timeline suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding an imminent reopening of the strait was premature, as critical details remain subjects of negotiation.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson characterized the ongoing discussions between Tehran and Muscat as professional and progressing positively, emphasizing that a shared understanding had been achieved concerning the geographical parameters of the route under consideration.
Baghaei concluded by stating that if external parties refrain from obstructing the proceedings, the joint statement detailing the primary considerations and key points of understanding is in the final stages of review and drafting.
