Spain recently experienced its first total solar eclipse in over a century, treating onlookers across the country and parts of North America, Europe, and Africa to a spectacular celestial show. The event was particularly photogenic due to the sun's low position on the horizon.
The eclipse's path of totality, which began in the Arctic Ocean and journeyed west of Iceland, reached Spain precisely at 8:30 pm Central European Summer Time. Regions including Galicia, Asturias, Castile and León, Madrid, Aragon, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands were treated to the full experience, while the rest of the nation witnessed a partial view.
This astronomical marvel lasted for about four and a half hours, with the total darkening phase lasting just under two minutes. This brief period of totality provided a golden opportunity for space agencies to conduct crucial scientific experiments.
NASA, for instance, deployed a WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft to track the moon's shadow from 50,000 feet. Scientists aimed to capture new data on the solar corona, the sun's outer atmosphere, which is best studied during these rare total eclipses. Additionally, university students from the US participated by launching scientific balloons in Iceland and Spain to analyze atmospheric changes caused by the eclipse's temporary darkness.
The stunning visuals from the eclipse are now available to admire. Looking ahead, a partial lunar eclipse is set to grace the skies across the Americas later this month, offering another chance for cosmic observation and research.
