Argentine President Javier Milei is set to address world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly amid heightened tensions with the United Kingdom over oil exploration activities near the Falkland Islands. The islands, a self-governing British territory, are claimed by Argentina, which refers to them as the Malvinas.
The dispute intensified earlier this month when Argentina initiated sanction proceedings against over 60 entities and individuals associated with an offshore oil drilling project. British officials have strongly condemned these actions, with Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Overseas Territories Uma Kumaran stating that Argentina's moves are "unacceptable" and affirming the Falkland Islands' British status and their right to exploit their natural resources.
Analysts anticipate that President Milei will likely reiterate Argentina's position during his UN address. The oil drilling project has significant ties to Israel, and Milei is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday. Argentina's claim to the South Atlantic islands remains a cornerstone of its national identity, recalling the 1982 war fought over the archipelago.
Milei has previously argued that the drilling project contravenes a 1976 UN resolution calling for dialogue to resolve the sovereignty dispute and the avoidance of unilateral actions. His stance has been viewed by some domestic political opponents as an effort to galvanize public support, particularly with a potential re-election bid in 2027. However, a recent study indicated that his televised address on the matter yielded only a marginal improvement in his public image.
Additionally, Milei has introduced legislation aimed at strengthening sanctions against those involved in activities that utilize natural resources within Argentina's maritime jurisdiction. The bill faces further legislative review, and its prospects in Congress, where Milei's party lacks a majority, remain uncertain, although some components may garner bipartisan support.
Meanwhile, the companies involved in the offshore project, Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration, have indicated that they do not anticipate Milei's actions will impede the development's progress.
