Pilot Hailed for Saving Passengers After Co-Pilot Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lauded Indian pilot Smit Machchhar for his actions in saving 174 passengers and crew after his co-pilot allegedly stabbed him and attempted to crash their FlyDubai plane. The aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia following the incident.

The dramatic event unfolded on Wednesday as the flight, en route from the United Arab Emirates to Israel, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. According to Israeli officials, the struggle began when the co-pilot attacked Machchhar, causing the jet to descend nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. Passengers and crew members ultimately overpowered the assailant.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Netanyahu indicated that Machchhar, found bleeding on the floor, managed to activate the cockpit door release. This allowed other passengers and crew to intervene, enabling two other FlyDubai pilots on board to safely land the aircraft in Saudi Arabia.

"He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals," Netanyahu stated via social media, emphasizing that all passengers were safe. He had previously released a video statement confirming the safety of those on board.

Machchhar, who previously spent over 11 years with India's SpiceJet airline, is reported to be stable and receiving medical attention in Tabuk. Indian authorities are coordinating with his family and Saudi officials to provide support. FlyDubai has launched an investigation into the incident and suspended flights to and from Israel, cautioning against premature speculation regarding the cause of the altercation.
