Israeli forces have injured at least 53 Palestinians during protests in Sheikh Jarrah and around Jerusalem's Old City, 23 of whom have been evacuated to nearby hospitals, the Palestinian Red Crescent says. The rest were treated at the scene by local medics.

The majority of the injuries were to the eyes and head and were caused by rubber-coated steel bullets and stun grenades, the group says.

Ambulances have been lined up around Jerusalem's Old City in preparation for further injuries.

Israeli forces have also arrested dozens of Palestinians from around the Old City during the past few hours, according to official Palestinian news agency Wafa.
