Shocked worker finds a ‘giant rat the size of a CAR’ lurking in the sewers – but all isn’t what it seems

Workers spotted the huge rodent hunched over in a drain as they sorted through 22 tons of trash last Friday after heavy rain, according to the Border Report.

When the workers put any initial fears aside, they discovered it was actually fake and a Halloween prop.

A woman, Evelin López, claimed the rat was hers and had disappeared during a storm years ago.

She said she had asked for help in searching the drains at the time ,but to no avail.

The rat looked so real that some people said they would have fled in fear had they encountered it on the street.

After her long lost creation was unearthed, López said she was unsure what she would do with it and if she would even keep it.

A cleanup crew worker cared enough about the giant rat to rescue it, prop it upright and wash it down with a hose—video footage of which has gone viral.

Some social media users suggested that the rat be recycled for Halloween this year, according to the New York Post.

The giant rat is the latest of a variety of unlikely objects that have emerged from sewers around the world.

Last October, a team of engineers extracted a 40 ton fatberg from sewers in London.

In 2010, a live 18-inch alligator crawled out of a storm drain that was overflowing in the Astoria neighborhood of New York City.

The giant rat in Mexico may not have been real, but oversized rodents recently made headlines elsewhere.

Rats described as being the size of rabbits overran homes in the British town of Merseyside in August, according to the Daily Star, and were captured on video.
