Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian clinches victory in Iran's presidential election

Masoud Pezeshkian has been voted as the ninth president of Iran's Islamic Republic, according to initial reports by media close to the opposing Jalili campaign on July 6.

Raja News, a channel closely aligned with conservative candidate Saeed Jalili, has reported that Pezeshkian has secured approximately 16mn votes, whilst Jalili trails with roughly 13mn.

The Entekhab news website, citing analysis of voting patterns and field reports, suggests that voter turnout for the second round is hovering around 50%

"Based on an examination of each candidate's strongholds, we project Masoud Pezeshkian to emerge victorious with nearly 16mn votes," a Raja News correspondent stated.

These figures, however, remain unofficial estimates. The Iranian Interior Ministry, which oversees the election process, has yet to release any formal results.

Political analysts note that the remaining ballots are likely to be declared invalid.

The runoff was necessitated after no candidate secured an outright majority in the first round of voting. This second round has pitted Pezeshkian, a reformist former health minister, against Jalili, a conservative former nuclear negotiator.

As the nation awaits official confirmation, the outcome of this election could signal a significant shift in Iran's domestic and foreign policies.
