Konate Ditching Liverpool Over Wage Dispute

Ibrahima Konate is reportedly set to depart Liverpool on a free transfer this summer due to a stalemate over wage negotiations.

The French international's contract is up at the end of June, and despite Liverpool reportedly offering him a "very good offer" to stay, the financial terms weren't enough to convince the 27-year-old defender to extend his tenure on Merseyside.

TalkSPORT's Alex Crook revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that both parties couldn't reach an agreement on Konate's wage demands. While Liverpool's commitment to their wage structure is commendable, the outlet suggests this is another significant misstep for the club's decision-makers.

This departure adds a new centre-back to Liverpool's already busy summer transfer wishlist. With reports indicating a more constrained budget compared to previous windows, the Reds face a challenging task in strengthening their squad, especially with key areas needing reinforcement from midfield to the forward line.

Konate is said to be earning around £150,000 per week, and with offers on the table reportedly being "very good," questions arise about the salary he was seeking. Considering players like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike earn £200,000 weekly, and Andy Robertson maxed out at £160,000, Konate's expectations are a talking point.

With Marcos Senesi off the table, Liverpool is exploring options like Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck. If the Reds can activate his reported €50m-60m (£43.2m-51.9m) release clause, it could be a strategic move within their budget constraints, especially considering the potential need for a young centre-back to partner Virgil van Dijk.
