Marjane Satrapi, 'Persepolis' Author, Dies at 56

Marjane Satrapi, the celebrated Iranian-French author whose graphic novel series "Persepolis" provided a compelling narrative of Iranian life during the tumultuous period surrounding the Islamic Revolution, has passed away at the age of 56.

The French presidency announced her death on Thursday, noting that the specific circumstances and location of her passing were not disclosed. In a statement, the presidency described Satrapi's death as a significant loss for French culture and hailed her as a freedom-loving artist whose universally resonant work garnered extensive international recognition.

"Persepolis," published over two decades ago, established Satrapi as a prominent voice in the burgeoning field of graphic novels that artfully blended political history with personal memoir. The series' protagonist, Marji, navigates the challenging years of Iranian history, mirroring Satrapi's own life experiences.

Born in Iran in 1969, both Satrapi and her fictional counterpart experienced the overthrow of the Shah at approximately age 10. They also lived through the rise of clerical rule and the devastating Iran-Iraq War, with both characters departing Iran at the age of 14 to pursue studies in Austria.

Satrapi relocated to Paris in 1994, where she authored the "Persepolis" series. The initial volume was released in English in 2003, followed by the second volume a year later. The graphic novels achieved widespread critical acclaim and introduced a global audience to the complexities of life in Iran during a period of profound change.
