Mayor Karen Bass Secures Runoff Spot Amidst Coalition Building

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has secured a position in the upcoming November 3 runoff election, leveraging a broad coalition of supporters that united diverse factions, including organized labor, business leaders, the Democratic Party, and immigrant rights groups.

During a contentious primary campaign, Bass, known for her coalition-building reputation, successfully assembled support from organized labor, prominent business figures, and key Democratic officials, alongside immigrant rights organizations. This broad alliance enabled her to withstand criticism from rivals such as reality TV personality Spencer Pratt and City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who are competing for the second runoff spot.

Political strategist Kerman Maddox commented on the unique nature of Bass's coalition, noting, "You don’t often get business and labor on the same side. You don’t often get police and progressives on the same side... She did it tonight, and we’re going to do it again in the runoff." While the final opponent for Bass remains undetermined as mail-in ballots are still being counted, her ability to unite disparate groups was central to her primary success.

Despite facing significant criticism regarding her handling of homelessness, housing production, and the devastating January 2025 Palisades fire, Bass's strategic coalition building proved effective. Fernando Guerra, who leads the Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University, stated, "It was a frustrated, anti-incumbent electorate, and she weathered that storm."

Bass's first term featured several decisions that garnered praise from her allies, including a negotiated package of police raises and retention bonuses, and the revival of the city's convention center upgrade. These initiatives, supported by groups like the Los Angeles Police Protective League and the Central City Association, were funded by significant investments from organizations such as Airbnb and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, as well as the police union.

Conversely, Councilmember Nithya Raman criticized Bass's decisions on the police raises and convention center expansion as financially reckless, alleging "pay-to-play deals." Raman argued these agreements would strain city finances. Mayor Bass defended the police raises as necessary for departmental stability and the convention center upgrade as a boost to tourism and the downtown economy.

Bass also strategically secured support from some of Raman's political allies, including three Democratic Socialist of America-backed council members, underscoring her ability to build bridges across ideological divides. While opponents like Raman and Spencer Pratt raised concerns about Bass's record on housing and public safety, Bass highlighted a decrease in street homelessness and a reduction in the homicide rate as key achievements of her tenure.
