US Strikes Iranian Radar Sites After Drone Incident Near Hormuz

U.S. forces conducted strikes on Iranian coastal radar sites on Saturday following the interception of multiple Iranian drones aimed at the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. The incident complicates ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire in a conflict that has spanned nearly four months.

According to a U.S. official, the four Iranian drones were believed to be targeting regional maritime traffic. U.S. Central Command confirmed on X that surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, both strategically located along the Strait of Hormuz, were subsequently targeted by U.S. forces.

These developments occur amid complex, largely indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at securing an interim agreement to halt hostilities. Such an accord would defer discussions on contentious issues, including Iran's nuclear program, to future negotiations. Tehran's demands reportedly include access to billions of dollars in frozen oil revenues, relief from sanctions on crude exports, the lifting of U.S. port blockades, and specific considerations regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route.

The U.S. military stated that while a substantial portion of Iran's drone and missile manufacturing capabilities have been degraded, the nation retains a percentage of its missile capacity. President Donald Trump commented that Iran still possesses a notable quantity of missiles and drones, though significantly less than at the outset of military operations.

In a parallel theater, the conflict in Lebanon has seen Iran-aligned group Hezbollah claim responsibility for attacks on Israeli troops near Beaufort Castle, while Lebanese security services reported Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon. Iran has reiterated its support for Hezbollah and has made a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah a prerequisite for any peace deal with Washington concerning the broader regional conflict and the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
