US Shoots Down Iranian Drones Near Strait of Hormuz; Iran Claims Missile Strikes

U.S. military forces intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and attack drones targeting countries in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). This escalation represents the latest threat to the fragile cease-fire between Iran and the United States.

CENTCOM reported that Iran launched seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, with six being successfully intercepted and one falling short. Hours prior, U.S. forces downed four Iranian one-way attack drones that were headed toward the Strait of Hormuz. The military command stated that these drones "posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic." In response, U.S. forces conducted strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, located off the Iranian coast, to preempt further attacks.

The events on Friday followed a discernible pattern observed in recent days. Approximately two hours after CENTCOM announced the interception of Iranian drones, Kuwait's military reported that its air defense systems were engaging hostile drones and missiles. While the Kuwaiti statement, issued early Saturday local time, did not specify the origin of these projectiles, Bahrain's interior ministry confirmed that warning sirens were activated early Saturday, though no cause was mentioned.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) stated early Saturday local time that it had retaliated against U.S. strikes in Sirik and on Qeshm Island by targeting "enemy bases" in the region. According to a statement published by Iranian state media, the IRGC launched ballistic missiles at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and facilities belonging to the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. The IRGC also issued a warning of a more severe response should similar U.S. strikes occur again.

CENTCOM confirmed that the Iranian attacks caused no damage to U.S. bases and resulted in no injuries to American personnel. The military reiterated its commitment to vigilance, stating, "American forces remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defense."
