Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly eyeing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke, with a Dutch journalist suggesting the move would be a significant career step for the player. Spurs have already seen a €40 million bid rejected for the 25-year-old center-back, and speculation suggests his price tag could reach €80 million.
Dutch journalist Mike Verweij believes Tottenham represents an ideal destination for the Netherlands international this summer, despite the club's recent struggles compared to Brighton. Verweij stated that Spurs, as a larger club, offer a better platform for Van Hecke's development.
“Whether he’ll ever reach that level (Van Dijk and Ake) remains to be seen,” Verweij told Voetbal Primeur. “But it’s certainly a very logical move. Spurs have had a disastrous season, finishing below Brighton, but Spurs are a much bigger club than Brighton. So that would be a really great step in that lad’s development, to be able to train there under Roberto De Zerbi. I think he should definitely go for it.”
While Tottenham endured a difficult season, finishing below Brighton, Verweij highlighted the club's potential under manager Roberto De Zerbi. He suggested that a move to Spurs could see Van Hecke train under De Zerbi, whom he already knows from their time at Brighton, potentially leading to a reunion that benefits all parties.
With Cristian Romero expected to depart Tottenham, the club is in need of defensive reinforcements. Van Hecke, having proven his quality in the Premier League, is seen as a strong candidate to fill that void and make an immediate impact in London.
