Chinese authorities have arrested U.S. doctoral student U Min Zin, accusing him of espionage and endangering national security. Zin was taken into custody on June 3 at Kunming Changshui International Airport in Yunnan Province.
The circumstances surrounding Zin's arrest remain unclear, though he was reportedly traveling for academic purposes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou was notified of the detention. This incident occurs amid efforts to stabilize U.S.-China relations, following a meeting between Presidents Trump and Xi Jinping.
A State Department official acknowledged awareness of the reports concerning a U.S. citizen detained in China, stating that consular assistance would be provided as appropriate. However, privacy laws preclude further comment at this time.
U Min Zin is a doctoral candidate at UC Berkeley, specializing in Myanmar and Chinese foreign policy, according to his academic profile. He also holds a master's degree from the university. Zin is a founder and executive director of ISP Myanmar, a Thailand-based think tank, and was a student activist during Burma's 1988 democracy movement.
His past activism led to his expulsion from high school and subsequent evasion of arrest, prompting him to flee to Thailand in 1997. He later worked as a journalist for prominent publications. Zin expressed a desire to return to Burma to contribute to journalism and education, recognizing their importance for national development.
