Iran Claims US Draft Deal Includes Oil Sanctions Waiver, Nuclear Limits

A senior Iranian official has informed Reuters that a draft memorandum of understanding with the United States outlines terms covering Iran's nuclear program, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of U.S. oil sanctions, with a final agreement to be negotiated within 60 days of initial consent.

According to the official, the proposed draft memorandum addresses several key areas. Iran would immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels, while the U.S. would lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports.

On financial matters, the U.S. has reportedly agreed not to impose new sanctions on Iran pending a final deal. Furthermore, the U.S. would grant waivers on oil sanctions for a defined period, enabling Iran to resume oil sales and access revenues. The draft also includes provisions for the release of $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets, potentially through direct cash transfers, regional cooperation, or financial credit lines.

Regarding Iran's nuclear activities, Tehran would commit to not producing or acquiring nuclear weapons and to maintain the current nuclear status quo, including refraining from enriching uranium and expanding nuclear facilities. The U.S. would agree to Iran diluting its stockpile of highly enriched uranium within the country, with the specific mechanism to be determined within the 60-day discussion period.
