Nico Schlotterbeck, a name on the radar of both Manchester United and Liverpool, has put Germany back in the lead against Curaçao with a commanding header.
The match saw an early opener from Borussia Dortmund teammate Felix Nmecha, but Curaçao stunned the four-time world champions with an equalizer from Livano Comenencia, marking their historic first World Cup goal. However, just before halftime, the 6-foot-3 defender Schlotterbeck rose above the defense in the 38th minute to convert a corner with a powerful header, making the score 2-1.
The drama continued just before the break when Kai Havertz calmly converted a penalty, extending Germany's lead to 3-1 after Nmecha was fouled in the box.
Schlotterbeck's impactful performance, both defensively and offensively, is only intensifying transfer speculation surrounding his future. Liverpool has been heavily linked with the 26-year-old as they search for a long-term successor for veteran Virgil van Dijk, whose contract expires in 2027. Schlotterbeck's left-footed distribution and aerial prowess reportedly make him an ideal candidate for Anfield.
Manchester United is also reportedly keen on the German center-back. Manager Michael Carrick is eager to bring in an elite, ball-playing defender to anchor their defensive rebuild, and Schlotterbeck is said to be a top target. Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has confirmed United's interest, suggesting that if the player doesn't renew his contract with Dortmund, he could be available for around €30m-€35m (£26m-£31m) this summer.
With the World Cup spotlight firmly on him, Schlotterbeck's value is expected to continue rising as the second half of the match unfolds.
