Newcastle United are pivoting their transfer strategy, reportedly exploring alternatives to wantaway winger Nico Williams after Liverpool emerged as favorites to sign the Osasuna star. While Newcastle had advanced talks, their hesitation to meet Williams' release clause allowed Liverpool to swoop in.
The Magpies, however, aren't short on backup plans. Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Cody Gakpo have all been on their radar for a while. With the Williams deal seemingly off the table, Newcastle might accelerate their pursuit of Gakpo, though Tottenham are also reportedly keen.
Sources indicate that Newcastle has already initiated conversations with Arsenal regarding the availability of Trossard and Martinelli. Trossard's move appears unlikely, as he's reportedly in advanced talks with Besiktas, a deal Newcastle was tipped off about previously.
Martinelli, on the other hand, is said to be available, prompting Newcastle to gather intel on his potential price tag. "Newcastle have been exploring other options, they weren’t putting all their eggs into the Munoz basket," a source revealed. "They’ve asked Arsenal about Trossard and Martinelli. They also like Cody Gakpo, but the current feeling seems to be that Martinelli could be cheaper."
The club is not in a rush, emphasizing their cautious approach to acquisitions. They weren't fully committed to meeting Williams' release clause and are prepared to wait for a signing that genuinely strengthens the squad without overspending.
This winger search comes as Newcastle prepares for potential departures, including Nicklas Bendtner. The German international has struggled to establish himself under Eddie Howe and could be sold after just one season, with Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa showing interest.
