Chelsea is reportedly plotting a surprise move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, potentially as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who has been linked with a departure from Stamford Bridge.
Wirtz, 23, has been a standout performer for Bayer Leverkusen, boasting 17 goal contributions across all competitions this season. He previously flourished under the guidance of new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso during their time together at the German club, according to Football Insider.
Alonso is said to be a significant admirer of the midfielder and played a crucial role in his development. However, convincing both Leverkusen and Wirtz to make the switch to Chelsea would be a monumental task. Wirtz is under a long-term contract with Leverkusen, who paid a substantial fee for him, and they are unlikely to sanction his sale easily as they build a squad capable of challenging for major honors.
Furthermore, Wirtz himself has little incentive to leave Leverkusen for Chelsea, a club currently in a transitional phase. He is more likely to pursue major trophies with his current team. The German international is considered a cornerstone of Leverkusen's plans.
Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, with reports suggesting a potential fee of around £120 million. The Spanish club is reportedly seeking to bolster its midfield, and Fernandez's outstanding performances for Chelsea, including 22 goal contributions last season, make him an attractive, albeit costly, option. His departure would represent a significant blow to Chelsea's ambitions.
