Slate EV Truck: America's Cheapest Electric Pickup Arrives at $25K

Slate is making waves in the automotive industry by launching the most affordable electric truck in the US, starting at just $24,950. This compact EV truck, designed for simplicity and affordability, aims to capture a market segment that has largely been abandoned by traditional automakers.

While the electric truck market once saw ambitious launches like the Ford F-150 Lightning at much higher price points, the focus is shifting towards more accessible options. Ford is rumored to be working on a smaller EV truck, Telo has its mini MT1 in the works, and now Slate is entering the fray with its all-electric pickup.

With an average new car price exceeding $50,000, Slate's sub-$25,000 sticker price is a significant achievement. The company claims first deliveries are expected by the end of the year, with a substantial number of reservations already placed. The base "Blank Slate" model features a 65-kWh battery offering a 205-mile range, a 2,000-pound tow rating, and a 1,550-pound payload capacity. Charging takes about 30 minutes for a 20-80% boost with a 120 kW DC fast charger.

To achieve its aggressive price point, Slate has stripped down the truck to its essentials. It foregoes a touchscreen in favor of a smartphone clip and comes in a single gray color molded directly into its composite body panels, featuring manual window winders. The truck is also designed to be versatile, with buyers able to convert it into SUV variants, the Squareback or Fastback, starting at $29,950, or upgrade later.

Slate plans to offer over 200 accessories, many priced under $500, and even full vehicle wraps in over 100 colors. The LFP battery and powertrain are backed by a 10-year or 110,000-mile warranty. The company emphasizes a simpler construction with fewer parts, and provides a DIY repair guide and access to over 3,000 RepairPal shops nationwide.

Despite the attractive pricing and improved range, it's important to note that the 205-mile range is based on Slate's internal estimates, not an official EPA rating, and specifications may change as the vehicle is still in preproduction. Industry analysts are watching closely, with Edmunds' director of insights, Ivan Drury, stating, "Slate is making a $25,000 bet that drivers still want something simple. Our data shows the market walked away from that price years ago, so this is a real test of how much affordability still matters."
