Teen Falls 50 Feet on Disneyland Ride; State Finds No Operational Issues

A 13-year-old sustained a 50-foot fall from Disneyland's Tiana's Bayou Adventure after climbing out of the ride vehicle, prompting an inspection by state regulators who found no operational issues with the attraction.

California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health's Amusement Ride & Tramway Unit inspected the attraction following the incident, which occurred Sunday evening. The agency approved the ride to reopen after its review. Disneyland officials stated the teen exited the log flume vehicle before the ride concluded.

Video footage captured the moment the boy fell down the ride's waterfall. Disneyland employees immediately halted the attraction, which remained closed until Monday. The teen was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and was subsequently released, according to park officials.

The reason for the teen's departure from the ride remains unclear. Log flume-style attractions have seen similar incidents; notably, a man died in 2000 after exiting Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World and being struck by another boat. Tiana's Bayou Adventure, formerly Splash Mountain, was reimagined this year and does not feature safety belts or lap bars. This design is common for log flumes, as safety harnesses could pose a risk if boats overturn.

Experts suggest that while exiting a log flume is generally considered less likely to result in severe injury than other ride types, such incidents can occur due to panic, confusion, or behavioral factors. The 13-year-old was reportedly evaluated as a precaution, with park officials confirming his release from the hospital.

The incident may prompt a reevaluation of safety measures for the attraction. Safety specialists have advocated for added restraints on theme park rides, or alternatively, increased monitoring by ride attendants to intervene in potential departures. There is a consensus that all parties involved should reflect on future preventative measures.
