Mahrez's "Awkward" Goal Sparks Match-Fixing Firestorm

A dramatic 3-3 draw between Algeria and Austria at the World Cup 2026 has ignited a firestorm of match-fixing allegations, with fans and pundits convinced the result was deliberately engineered to benefit both nations and eliminate Iran.

The controversial Group J finale saw both teams progress to the Round of 32, a scenario that a draw would guarantee. However, the closing minutes of the match in Kansas City have drawn heavy criticism and revived dark memories of past controversies.

The tension peaked when Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez appeared to score a winning goal in the 93rd minute, putting his team up 3-2. This goal immediately drew an angry reaction from the Austria bench, as a loss would have eliminated them. Intriguingly, even Mahrez's own teammates seemed to question the goal during the celebration.

Suspicion only intensified three minutes later. Deep into stoppage time, Austria's Saša Kalajdžić headed home an equalizer in the 96th minute, restoring the exact 3-3 scoreline both sides needed to advance.

While managers Ralf Rangnick and Vladimir Petković have denied any pre-arranged agreement, Riyad Mahrez's post-match comments have only fueled the speculation. In an interview described by many as a "confession," the former Manchester City winger admitted the situation was "a bit awkward."

"We were playing wide and they were sitting... but the ball came to me, what do I do? I have to shoot and respect football," Mahrez stated, adding to the online frenzy. His candid admission has particularly angered Iranian supporters, who are now flooding social media demanding a FIFA investigation.
