Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council is urging a more robust European stance against the Iran-backed Houthi militia and its supporters, emphasizing the need for enhanced international measures to counter escalating threats to regional security and stability.
The council, led by Rashad al-Alimi, expressed reliance on expanded European engagement to bolster Yemen's economic recovery. However, this reliance raises questions about the sufficiency of current international approaches in addressing the Houthi militia's actions and the persistent security and humanitarian challenges hindering stability.
During a meeting with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Yemen, Jantine Sijbren, discussions focused on bilateral relations and Dutch support priorities in economic reforms, institutional capacity building, water, agriculture, food security, and port development. Al-Alimi highlighted advancements in women's participation in decision-making roles within state institutions.
Al-Alimi also addressed the Houthi militia's military escalation and alleged human rights violations, including the continued detention of United Nations and international organization personnel, military mobilization campaigns, and threats to vital waterways and regional security. He called upon European partners to adopt more decisive actions, such as joining international sanctions regimes and working to halt the flow of funding and weapons that prolong the conflict. Al-Alimi asserted that deterring what he described as the "Iran-backed Houthi project" is fundamental to ending the crisis and achieving stability in Yemen and the wider region.
Despite these calls, observers note a discrepancy between the escalating challenges on the ground and the slow pace of international response, encompassing both relief efforts and political-economic deterrence measures against the Houthi militia. The Dutch Ambassador shared insights from her recent visit to Marib Governorate, which hosts a significant number of displaced persons and faces increasing humanitarian and development burdens, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced donor interventions in infrastructure and essential services.
