Motorola is simplifying international mobile data with a new, built-in travel eSIM feature integrated directly into its smartphones. This move aims to make staying connected abroad more seamless and affordable for travelers.
While travel eSIMs have surged in popularity for their convenience and cost savings over traditional roaming fees, Motorola is taking it a step further by embedding this functionality natively. Initially, users will access this service through the "Global Connect" app, available on the Google Play Store, with plans for pre-installation on future devices. The feature is compatible with any Motorola phone supporting eSIM, including budget-friendly options like the Moto G Play, and is currently rolling out in select Latin American markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, and Chile. Support for Germany, the UK, and broader Europe is expected within weeks, though US availability details are still pending.
Travel eSIMs offer a way for globetrotters to instantly activate a data-only eSIM upon arrival, bypassing the need to find physical SIM cards or kiosks. Users can easily top up their data allowance via an app and pay as they go. Motorola's solution, like others, focuses on data and doesn't include traditional call or text capabilities, a trade-off many travelers find acceptable given the widespread use of messaging apps like WhatsApp.
This integrated service is powered by Gigs, a firm that streamlines the process for companies to offer mobile data plans. Gigs is also behind similar offerings for Klarna and Cash App. Motorola has collaborated closely with Gigs to ensure the experience feels like a native Motorola feature, rather than a third-party integration. While Motorola highlights this as a first for a major manufacturer, the Chinese company Xiaomi had a similar, though now discontinued, virtual travel SIM function as far back as 2015.
Sudhir Chadaga, Motorola's vice president for Partnerships, explained that users need to download the Global Connect app and create a Gigs account. New users can snag 1 GB of free data for a limited time with their first travel eSIM. Afterward, data can be purchased at competitive rates, starting at $3 for 1 GB valid for 30 days, up to $14 for 20 GB, with service available in over 160 countries. This single travel eSIM can be reused for all future trips.
The shift towards travel eSIMs is driven by significant cost savings compared to international roaming. Industry analysts note that travel eSIMs can offer double the data for half the price of traditional roaming plans. This ease of use, combined with the ability to manage calls and messages via apps, makes them increasingly attractive. The growing availability of eSIM functionality across smartphone brands, including Apple's eSIM-only iPhones and Google's Pixel series, further fuels this trend, although adoption varies by region.
With a crowded market of travel eSIM providers, the focus is shifting towards early integration into the travel journey. While built-in apps offer a prime touchpoint, Siddhant Cally, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, suggests that ultimate success will still depend on offering competitive pricing and tailored services for specific destinations. Motorola's current approach, focusing on markets potentially more open to alternative data solutions, might be a strategic initial step before potentially expanding to the primarily postpaid US market.
