Spain's Coach Boosts World Cup Hopes: "More Optimistic Every Day"

Spain's manager, Luis de la Fuente, is increasingly confident about his team's chances of winning the 2026 World Cup, expressing growing optimism ahead of their upcoming match against Austria.

La Roja are aiming to secure their first knockout stage victory since 2010, having faced early exits in the last three World Cups. While some fans have been underwhelmed by their performances so far, with only brief flashes of brilliance against Saudi Arabia, De la Fuente highlighted the team's progress and adaptability.

"We thrive on high standards and demand the best from ourselves," De la Fuente told Marca. "You have to adapt to your opponents; that drives improvement. The team is starting to show many of the automatisms from the past, but we are also very pleased with what we have shown so far. Now there is no margin for error – we have to win."

He further elaborated on his optimism, stating, "As the days go by, I become more optimistic. To me, they are the best in the world. There are surprises, but it depends on who you ask. Not for me. You have to be at your best and avoid making mistakes. I am demanding and realistic, but increasingly optimistic."

Addressing comments from Alejandro Grimaldo about bench time, De la Fuente emphasized team unity. "These players are top-tier talents, and here, the simple mathematics are that only eleven can play. But there is an aspect more important than ambition: respect and getting along with one another. You have to want what’s best for the team."

Regarding injuries, Lamine Yamal is expected to be fit for the full match against Austria. Yeremy Pino is also anticipated to be available for the bench, with fears of a more serious injury proving unfounded. Nico Williams has mild discomfort that rules him out for the upcoming game, but De la Fuente is optimistic about his return if Spain advances. Victor Munoz, who hasn't played competitively since mid-May, is also expected to be on the bench, potentially playing a key role if the team progresses.
