Sony Pulls StudioCanal Content From PlayStation Store

Sony is removing StudioCanal movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Store for UK users starting September 1, impacting 551 titles and serving as a stark reminder that digital purchases often aren't true ownership.

Previously purchased content, including films like "Paddington," "Paddington 2," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," will become inaccessible for streaming. Sony cited "content licensing agreements" as the reason for the removals.

This isn't the first time Sony has yanked digital content. In 2022, 314 StudioCanal titles vanished from libraries in Germany and Austria. More recently, users lost access to their Funimation digital libraries when the service merged with Crunchyroll. Sony has also been phasing out its digital movie and TV store, stopping sales and rentals in August 2021.

While there's a slim chance Sony might strike a new deal with StudioCanal, similar to a situation with Discovery content in 2023 that was eventually restored, users shouldn't hold their breath. The trend suggests a broader industry shift away from permanent digital ownership, with digital "purchases" functioning more like long-term licenses that are subject to the content provider's distribution rights.

The move has sparked frustration among consumers, with many calling for refunds or clearer terminology, like "rental" instead of "purchase," to accurately reflect the nature of digital media acquisition.
