Belgium is prepared to lodge an appeal if U.S. Men's National Team striker Folarin Balogun plays against them, claiming the USMNT would be fielding an ineligible player.
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has informed U.S. Soccer of their intent to file a complaint if Balogun takes the field. The RBFA is reportedly seeking an explanation for why Balogun's one-game ban, originally for a red card during the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, was converted into a suspended sentence by FIFA.
Balogun was initially set to miss the Round of 16 World Cup tie. However, FIFA announced over the weekend that his ban had been suspended, a decision that has caused significant controversy. The RBFA's subsequent appeal against this ruling was rejected by FIFA.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed the situation, emphasizing the independence of FIFA's judicial bodies. He stated that these committees operate autonomously, applying the FIFA Disciplinary Code based on regulations and facts, and that their independence is crucial for football's credibility.
Infantino confirmed he had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the matter, as he regularly communicates with heads of state and other stakeholders on various issues. He explained to Trump that an independent legal process was underway and would be decided by the competent bodies, upholding FIFA's system.
If Belgium's complaint were to be successful, the USMNT could face a 3-0 forfeit and elimination from the tournament. However, given FIFA's previous decisions in this case, the USMNT may have a strong chance of avoiding punishment.
