Trump Calls Released American Citizen a 'Goodwill Gesture' Amid Mideast Conflict

Former President Donald Trump has described the release of an American citizen detained in Iran as a "gesture of goodwill," occurring as military tensions escalate across the Middle East.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that an American, identified by her attorney as Dena Karari, who was "wrongfully detained" under the current administration in 2024, has been permitted to depart Iran. Trump conveyed that the individual is now safely outside Iran and in good health, expressing the United States' appreciation for Iran's action.

Jared Genser, a human rights attorney, confirmed Karari's release, noting her safe return journey to the United States and thanking Trump for his involvement in securing her freedom. Iran has not officially confirmed or denied Karari's release.

This development follows several nights of U.S. military operations targeting Iran, aimed at securing the critical Strait of Hormuz shipping lane. The release also comes amidst heightened rhetoric from Trump, who has threatened to strike Iranian infrastructure. U.S. officials have indicated that these strikes are strategically designed to degrade Iranian military capabilities, potentially in preparation for more extensive future operations.

Iran has responded by claiming to have conducted strikes against U.S. bases in Kuwait and Jordan. Reports indicate that Karari, a 53-year-old California resident, had her passport confiscated in December 2024 during a visit to family in Shiraz. According to her lawyer, she was not formally detained but underwent interrogations by authorities.
