Recent U.S. strikes targeting Iran, primarily aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, are also degrading Iranian military capabilities, potentially bolstering President Donald Trump's options for further escalation, according to three U.S. officials.

These officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters, indicated that the ongoing strikes are preparatory, weakening Iranian defenses that would be crucial to neutralize before undertaking more complex military operations. This development comes as President Trump recently notified Congress of a formal resumption of conflict with Iran, leaving his future actions uncertain.

The conflict, now in its fifth month following the collapse of a peace memorandum, has seen significant damage inflicted upon Iran's military. However, Tehran reportedly retains substantial drone and missile capabilities, which it has employed against commercial tankers and neighboring states. U.S. military assessments confirm that recent bombings have focused on Iranian air defense systems, coastal radar, missile and drone sites, and maritime assets.

One official described these strikes as "shaping operations," designed to degrade Iranian defenses in anticipation of potential, more intensive U.S. military actions. Such preparatory measures, if deemed necessary, could set the stage for broader operations. The Pentagon has not yet provided an immediate comment on these assessments.

Past reporting by Reuters indicated U.S. military planning for options that could involve deploying troops to Iran's coastline to better secure the Strait, including discussions about occupying Kharg Island, a vital hub for Iran's oil exports. President Trump has previously stated he opted against striking Iran's oil facilities during prior operations near Kharg Island but has not ruled out the seizure of the island itself, contingent on sufficient degradation of Iranian defenses. He has also mentioned striking a fortified nuclear-related site known as Pickaxe Mountain.

Mark Cancian, a retired U.S. Marine officer and analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, suggested that President Trump's public discussion of military options, such as seizing Kharg Island, presents a dual-edged strategy. While it may create diplomatic pressure by keeping Iran on edge, it could also pose risks to military planning by revealing potential objectives.

Critics, including some within the U.S. Congress, argue that while the conflict has achieved tactical successes, destroying significant portions of Iran's military infrastructure, it has not yielded strategic concessions. Instead, Iran has increased its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, utilizing unconventional means like drones and rockets to target commercial vessels even with a diminished conventional navy. This situation has reportedly spurred debate within the Trump administration regarding the optimal path forward, with some officials, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, advocating for military escalation. Imran Bayoumi, a former Pentagon official, commented that Trump's public statements may be intended to exert pressure in negotiations and maintain ambiguity about future military actions, suggesting that internal discussions within his national security team might differ from his public pronouncements.
