AWS Billing Glitch Briefly Shows Customers Trillions in Fees

Amazon Web Services customers were briefly greeted with some truly shocking billing statements, with some believing they owed the tech giant billions, and even trillions, of dollars due to a system glitch.

One affected user, Bill Radjewski, who runs CollegeFootballData.com, woke up to an email alert from AWS stating he owed over $1.5 billion in usage fees, with his August bill projected to hit $3 billion. This was particularly jarring, as his monthly spend typically hovers around $0.02.

Radjewski isn't the only one who experienced this digital nightmare. Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) saw other users reporting similarly astronomical figures, including $22 billion, $75 billion, and $110 billion. One user even lamented, "Blud why did you hit me with a cost of 5 million USD what did I even do, my heart will explode."

Amazon spokesperson Aisha Johnson directed inquiries to the AWS Service Health Dashboard, which indicated the issue was global. The dashboard revealed that the billing console started showing incorrect estimated billing data on Thursday, July 16, around 10:38 PM ET. The company identified the root cause as an "issue with unit pricing within the estimated billing computation subsystem."

AWS stated it was in the process of rolling back a recent change to its billing system and pausing estimated bill computations to revert to a stable state. The company assured customers that the issue should be resolved by the weekend and no immediate action is required from their end.

Despite the alarming figures, some users took to platforms like Reddit to share their experiences, with one user posting a screenshot showing $7.1 trillion in service fees since July 1 – a sum that dwarfs Amazon's entire market capitalization.
