Range Rover is shaking things up with the upcoming all-electric GT, a grand tourer built on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, which also supports other midsize EVs for the brand. This new model, slated for a 2027 release, sports a sleek silhouette and coupe-like proportions that lean more towards Jaguar's design language than Range Rover's traditional SUV focus.
While official details are scarce, with only camouflaged prototypes revealed, Range Rover aims to "redefine the grand-touring segment" with the GT, promising an EV that offers "capabilities no conventional GT can match." This wording suggests Range Rover is aware of the potential overlap with its sister brand, Jaguar, and its own upcoming electric grand tourer, the Type 01.
The GT's interior features a minimalist design with a small driver display and a larger central screen, but notably eschews physical buttons in favor of touch controls, a move against the current industry trend. Despite its car-like appearance and focus on refinement and performance, Range Rover insists the GT will still retain its signature all-terrain capabilities.
The GT will be manufactured at JLR's Halewood plant in the UK, sharing the EMA platform with future electric versions of the Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Velar, and a "Baby Defender." This contrasts with the larger Range Rover Electric, which will utilize the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform, the same base for the Jaguar Type 01.
Although Range Rover asserts that the GT and Jaguar Type 01 are distinct propositions, the similarities are undeniable: both are electric grand tourers launching in 2027, targeting affluent buyers seeking luxury and long-distance comfort. The question remains whether JLR will be pitting two similar luxury EVs from its own brands against each other, especially if pricing becomes competitive.
