Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has suggested the club should seriously consider selling forward Cody Gakpo this summer if a "decent offer" materializes, especially with Tottenham reportedly interested.
Heskey believes that the Netherlands international hasn't consistently hit the heights expected at Anfield and, at 27, might not see significant further development. He also pointed out that this summer could represent Liverpool's best opportunity to secure substantial funds from a Gakpo sale.
Speaking to 10bet, Heskey emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach. "When you’re coming in as a new manager, you have to cold-headedly look at your assets," he stated. "He is an asset who holds significant market value that you could cash in on to fund your own vision."
The former England international acknowledged Gakpo's decent performance at the World Cup, which has kept his profile high. However, he contrasted this with his club form, noting, "But at club level for Liverpool, it hasn’t consistently looked great for him. So yes, you’d definitely have to consider a serious offer."
While Gakpo has contributed 50 goals in 180 appearances for Liverpool, Heskey's assessment suggests the club might be able to improve its attacking options. However, the potential departure of other forwards like Mohamed Salah, coupled with Luis Diaz's previous exit and Hugo Ekitike's injury, could make offloading another key attacker a risky move for Liverpool.
