The blazes, which prompted Spain to declare a wildfire emergency with tens of thousands evacuated near Madrid, encroached upon the Robledo de Chavela municipality, home to a NASA Deep Space Communications Complex. Dramatic images showed the facility's radio telescopes shrouded in smoke.
NASA confirmed that all personnel were safely evacuated. While the fire has passed through the complex, the extent of damage to sensitive equipment is still unknown and will be assessed once it's safe. The agency has already rerouted mission operations to its Goldstone facility in California to ensure continuous communication support.
